North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Inclement weather and unfavorable forecasts across the coastal Grand Strand have prompted officials to postpone the resumption of the 2022 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,004-yard Dye Course at the Barefoot Golf Resort until Tuesday at 8 a.m. Teams will complete the second round before contesting the final 18 holes to crown both a team and individual conference champion.
The second round of competition started on Sunday after the opening 18 holes to get ahead of the poor weather forecasts for Monday. Conference and course officials met early Monday morning and decided to postpone play until Tuesday.
Three teams including Western Carolina, Samford, and The Citadel were each able to complete their second rounds on Sunday before darkness forced golfers to be pulled from the course. Chattanooga, UNCG, and Wofford each have golfers with at most three holes to complete, while the pairing of No. 45 Furman, Mercer, and ETSU have anywhere from six-to-nine remaining holes in the second round.
Tied for sixth after the first round, Western Carolina is in the clubhouse currently in fifth place with a two-round score of 610 with the remainder of the second round yet to be completed. At present, redshirt freshman
Kayleigh Baker rallied 18 spots over her second 18 holes to move into eighth place with a 36-hole score of 148 (77-71) to lead the Catamounts. Freshman
Elizabeth Lohbauer sits in a six-way tie for 12th at 150 (75-75) with the remainder of the field yet to complete the second round.
Furman leads the nine-team tournament at present time at 15-over par collectively, two strokes ahead of Mercer (+17). Wofford is third at +21 followed by ETSU (+29) and WCU (610, +34) to round out the top five. Sixth-place Chattanooga (+36) and seventh place UNCG (+37) both have two additional golfers to finish with Samford (617, +41) and The Citadel (654, +78) through 36 holes.
