Catamounts Earn 11th Victory of the Season at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Western Carolina women's tennis picked up a 4-2 nonconference win at Alabama State Saturday at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. 
 
TURNING POINT:
The Catamounts won the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and earned victories at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Carolina took the early 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Julia Pezzcuo and Jacy Smith picked up a 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles while Kata Foldeak and Angela Perez won at No. 2 doubles 6-3 to seal the doubles point. 
  • Three of the Catamounts' six singles matches went to three sets. 
  • Smith battled at No. 2 singles earning the victory. She won the first set 6-3, dropped the second set 2-6, and bounced back to seal the win 6-0. 
  • Antonella Benavides roared back at No. three singles after dropping the first set 2-6 she swept the final two 6-4, 6-4.
  • WCU clinched the match with the win at No. 6 singles. Pezzuco quickly swept through her opponent 6-2, 6-0.
 
 NOTES:
  • Western Carolina won its 11th match of the season marking the third-most wins in a season in program history.
  • Foldeak won her 12th doubles match of the season which is good for 10th in the WCU record books for most doubles wins in a season. 
  • Smith won her 30th singles match which is good for fifth place in the WCU record books. Also, Smith's 33 career doubles wins are good for second place in the record books. 
  • Western Carolina's last four matches of the season are at home. 
 
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina begins a four-match homestand, to close out the season, hosting Southern Conference leader Furman at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5.
