Catamounts Drop Doubleheader to Furman Saturday

Brewington stole four bases in the pair of games

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped its Southern Conference doubleheader at Furman Saturday at Pepsi Stadium. WCU lost in a walk-off home run 1-0 in game one and was not able to outlast a slugfest in game two, 13-6.

Turning Point 
Furman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Junior, Savannah Rice gave up only three hits and the game-winning run to Furman. She struck out five, did not yield a walk, and falls to 10-12. 
  • Western Carolina stranded eight runners in the game over four innings. 
  • Western Carolina had five hits in the contest. 
  • Myra Twitty had the lone extra-base hit for the Catamounts – a double in the second inning. 
  • Super senior Addie Pate had a pinch-hit single in the top of the seventh.

Turning Point 
With Western Carolina leading 6-3, Furman went on to score 10 unanswered runs to secure the conference series.
 
How it Happened 
  • Western Carolina broke open game two scoring four runs to open the game. Brooklynn Brewington hit a lead-off single and stole second. Claudia Riddle drew a walk setting up Bailey Huneycutt's at-bat. She blasted a two-RBI single to left-centerfield plating Brewington and Riddle. 
  • Myra Twitty followed Huneycutt reaching on a Furman error. Twitty was out at second on a fielder's choice by Rice. Samantha Reele singled up the middle scoring Huneycutt for an RBI and Rice scored on a Paladin error. 
  • In the bottom of the first Furman hit back-to-back singles and scored on a sacrifice fly. 
  • Western Carolina scored its fifth run of the game in the top of the second. With one out, Henry hit a single past second base. Brewington followed with an RBI triple to the left-centerfield. 
  • Furman cut the Catamount lead to two, in the bottom of the second, 5-3, with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly RBI. 
  • The Catamounts picked up a run in the top of the third. Twitty led off with a single and Rice followed up with a single up the middle. Rice was out at second on a fielder's choice by Reele which allowed Twitty to move to third. Pate hit a sacrifice fly RBI to the right field to score Twitty. 
  • In the bottom of the third, Furman scored four runs to take the lead, 7-6. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Furman hit back-to-back home runs to build on its lead. 
  • Furman added four more runs in the fifth. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Freshman Tessa Juett got the start and went three innings before being lifted. She gave up seven runs on nine hits and falls to 4-10 on the season.
  • Fellow freshman Makenzie Martin replaced Juett in the fourth inning. In her first inning of appearance, she struck out two and gave up two home runs. She tossed the final three innings giving up six runs on seven hits and struck out two. 
  • The Catamounts had 10 hits in the game. 
  • Brewington was 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and a triple. 
  • Twitty was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. 
 
 
News & Notes 
  • Huneycutt is on a four-game hitting streak and has a hit in six of the last seven games.
  • Brewington is also on a four-game hitting streak and has gotten at least one hit in eight of the last 10 games. 
  • Brewington stole four bases in the pair of games against Furman Saturday including three in game two against the Paladins – which ties the school record. 
  • For the season Brewington, who holds the single-season Catamount record, now has 28 stolen bases on the year which continues to lead the Southern Conference and moves up to 14th in the NCAA. In the Catamount career record books, Brewington already ranks third. 
  • Huneycutt now has 99 career RBI which is tied for third in the Catamount record books with former Catamount Lauren Ross. She needs eight to take over second place. 
  • Huneycutt's 92 career runs scored is good for seventh in the WCU record books. She needs two to move into sixth. 
 
 
Up Next
Western Carolina will look to salvage the conference series at Furman, and avoid a sweep, with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
