GREENVILLE, S.C. – Western Carolina softball lost the Southern Conference series finale 6-3 at Furman Sunday at the Pepsi Stadium.

Turning Point
After Western Carolina scored the first run of the game, in the first inning, Furman outscored the Catamounts 6-2 in the ensuing innings.

How it Happened
  • Junior Brooklynn Brewington led off the game with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out. Bailey Huneycutt's ground-out RBI to the shortstop scored Brewington.
  • Furman scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Catamounts cut the Paladin lead, to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Savannah Rice drew a two-out walk and Samantha Reele got on base thanks to a Paladin error pushing Rice to third. Reele stole second to put runners at second and third. Bethany Dobias hit two-RBI double scoring Rice and Reele.
  • Furman closed out the game by scoring a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Rice got the start tossing 5.1 innings and takes the loss falling to 10-13 on the season. She gave up seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out three.
  • Freshman Tessa Juett came into the game, to replace Rice, with one out in the sixth inning. She tossed 0.2 scoreless innings.
  • The Catamounts had four hits in the game.
  • Dobias was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

News & Notes
  • Brewington stole two bases in the game against Furman and the Catamounts' single-season leader has 30 on the year. She continues to lead the conference and is one stolen base away from 10th place in the SoCon record books for stolen bases in a season. Currently, she moves into the top 10 in the NCAA.
  • Huneycutt earned her 100th RBI of her career and becomes only the third Catamount in program history to have 100 or more RBI in a career. She is currently in third place and needs seven RBI to take over second place.
  • Brewington has 43 hits on the season and is one behind Catamount hit leader Huneycutt. That mark is three shy of tying her career mark for a season set at Charleston Southern in 2019.
  • Rice now has 141 strikeouts on the season and ranks ninth in the WCU record books. She needs seven to move into eighth.
