Huneycutt Breaks Career Home Run Record in Pair of Losses

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Senior Bailey Huneycutt broke the career program record for home runs (36) but it wasn't enough as errors and unanswered runs plagued Western Carolina softball in its 8-7, 10-6 losses to Chattanooga Saturday at the Catamount Softball Complex.

Turning Point 
Chattanooga overcame a 7-1 deficit scoring seven unanswered runs over the final three innings. 
 
How it Happened
  • A base-clearing three-run double by Savannah Rice put the Catamounts up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. 
  • The Catamounts went up 5-0 on a two-run home run by Huneycutt which broke the Catamount record for home runs in a career. 
  • Chattanooga scored a run in the top of the third with a solo home run. 
  • Myra Twitty's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth gave WCU a 7-1 lead.
  • Throughout the fifth and sixth inning, Western Carolina had four errors and Chattanooga scored seven unanswered runs – four in the fifth and three in the sixth.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Rice got the start tossing 5.2 innings falling to 10-14 on the season. She only gave up one earned run and struck out three.
  • Freshman Makenzie Martin replaced Rice throwing 1.1 scoreless innings.
  • Western Carolina had 11 hits in the game.
  • The Catamounts committed five errors.
  • Huneycutt was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, and drew one walk.

Turning Point 
Eerily similar to game one, Western Carolina took the early lead, and then Catamount errors and six unanswered runs doomed WCU.
 
How it Happened
  • Twitty's RBI single past third base gave WCU a 1-0 lead after one inning.
  • A three-run home run by Chattanooga put the Mocs up 3-1 in the third.
  • WCU posted three runs of its own in the bottom of the third with an RBI single up the middle by Twitty and a two-run home run by Addie Pate.
  • WU took a 5-3 lead with an RBI single by Brooklynn Brewington in the fourth.
  • Chattanooga cut the WCU lead to 5-4 with a lead-off home run in the fifth. Two Catamount errors aided in the Mocs scoring a total of four runs in the inning – three more after the solo home run.
  • Two more Catamount errors were part of Chattanooga scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth.
  • Chattanooga scored its 10th run of the game in the top of the seventh.
  • With two outs, Pate hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Tessa Juett tossed 5.1 innings in her start in game two. She gave up 12 hits, nine runs, four earned, and struck out two. She falls to 4-11 on the season.
  • Makenzie came into the game in relief in the sixth giving up one run on two hits.
  • Western Carolina had nine hits in the game and committed four errors.
  • Brewington was 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Both of Pate's hits in the game were home runs.
 
News & Notes 
  • Brewington stole two bases in the pair game against Chattanooga and now has 32 on the season – which continues to lead the Southern Conference.
  • Huneycutt's 14 home runs on the season tie her career season-high. She also had 14 in 2021.
  • As a team, the Catamounts have 47 home runs on the season which ranks third in the WCU record books for long balls in a season. 
  • Twitty hit her 11th home run of the season in the doubleheader against Chattanooga. She and Huneycutt have combined for 25 of WCU's 47 home runs on the season. 
  • Huneycutt's 102 career RBI is good for third in the WCU record books. She needs five to take over second place.
  • For the season, Huneycutt has a career-season high 48 RBI which is good for fourth in the WCU record books. She needs three RBI to move into third.
