Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at SoCon Championship

WCU put three inside the Top 15; Jake Peacock finished tied for 11th

Greensboro, Ga. – Western Carolina men's golf carded a final round score of 291 on Sunday afternoon, slipping one spot in the final standings to come home with a fourth-place finish with a three-day total of 861 at the 2022 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship which concluded at Reynolds Lake Oconee's par-72, 7,174-yard The Oconee Course. It was WCU's second-consecutive finish among the leaders in the conference after last year's runner-up showing.

WCU put three inside the individual Top 15 with freshman Jake Peacock pacing the squad in a tie for 11th at 3-under par 213 with seniors Louis Theys and Tumi Kúld both placing in a tie for 14th overall at 1-under par 215.

Opening his final round on the first tee, Peacock countered a pair of bogeys with a trio of birdies to make the turn for home at 1-under par. A bogey on the par-4 11th moved him back to even before consecutive bogeys on the 15th and 16th left him a 2-over par with two holes to play. The Milton, Ga., then eagled the par 5 17th to return to even par with a bogey on his final hole of the event leaving him at 73 for the day and 213 for the event.

Peacock led WCU with 13 total birdies and was one of two Catamounts to card an eagle at the conference championship. His three-day total of 213 was his best outing of the spring semester.

Theys and Kúld both finished in a three-way tie for 14th after the final hole of the season with matching scores of 1-under par 215. Theys carded three of his four birdies on the day in the first round, turning to the back at 2-under par. He returned to 3-under for the round with a birdie on No. 11, closing his day with three bogeys over his final seven holes for an even-par 72. Kúld charted 14 pars and countered three bogeys with a birdie over the final 18 holes to shoot 2-over par 74 on Sunday.

Theys carded 11 birdies at the 54-hole event, while Kúld finished tied for second in the tournament field with 38 pars.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five were junior Magnus Pedersen in a tie for 22nd overall after matching Theys for the team-low even-par round on Sunday, with sophomore Presten Richardson finishing tied for 30th with a final-round 2-over par 74. Pedersen countered five bogeys with five birdies and eight pars, while Richardson had six bogeys and four birdies in the third round.

No. 30 ETSU clinched its second-consecutive – and 22nd overall -- team title on Sunday, finishing 19 shots clear of runner-up UNCG, 825-to-844. Furman (857), which was paired with the Catamounts over the final two rounds, rallied past WCU (861) to finish third with Chattanooga (869) finishing fifth. Rounding out the team standings was Wofford (873), Mercer (887), and Samford (894).

ETSU redshirt sophomore Remi Chartier shot a 5-under-par 67 in the third round, following his career-low and a tournament-low score of 63 in the second, to claim medalist honors for the Bucs, nabbing his first collegiate win. UNCG's Nick Lyerly climbed four spots to finish in the runner-up position eight strokes in arrears at 206 with Wofford's Matthew Larkin completing the podium in third a stroke back at 207.

Western Carolina closed the 2021-22 season with three Top Five finishes and 11 Top Tens out of the 12 seasonal tournaments.
