DURHAM, N.C. – Senior
Kate Mattison etched her name in the Western Carolina track & field record books Friday night as she set the school record in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:00.51 at Morris Williams Stadium and the Duke Invitational.
Mattison crushed her previous personal best of 17:16.05 set at the Raleigh Relays two weeks ago and eclipsed Rita Roberts' record of 17:09.64 set at the 1994 Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. The Oconee, Ga., native finished in 11
th place out of 27 competitors that started the fastest of two sections.
In the men's long jump,
Javell Brown led four Catamount competitors with a 16
th -place finish after a leap of 6.92 meters (22'8.5").
Brandon Harvey recorded a leap of 6.62 meters (21'8.75') to finish in 26
th place and was closely followed in 27
th place by
Javon Brown with a mark of 6.60 meters (21'8").
Tyler Rodriguez turned in a leap of 6.49 meters (21'3.5") to finish in 30
th place.
WCU is back in action on Saturday as
Victoria Solheim competes in the women's discus at the Duke Invitational, while the majority of the Catamount squad takes part in the Aggie Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T.
