GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 6 seed Western Carolina softball dropped a tough 3-2 decision in 10 innings to No. 3 seed Chattanooga on Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the 2022 Southern Conference Softball Championships.

Junior hurler Savannah Rice pitched an absolute gem tossing a shutout through eight innings before yielding a total of three runs over the final two innings of the game.

Turning Point
With Western Carolina leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Chattanooga scored the tying run and then the go-ahead for the walk-off.

How it Happened
  • The phrase has to be used because it was true. The game began as a true pitching duel.
  • Each team was sat down in order five times.
  • There wasn't more than one base runner in an inning for either team until singles by Bailey Huneycutt and Addie Pate placed runners at the corners in the seventh inning. WCU failed to get a run and it remained scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the seventh Chattanooga had its runner at third but a pop-up ended the threat.
  • In the eighth inning Chattanooga had a pair of base runners and was looking to score but an ice-cold Rice, for the Catamounts, struck out the Mocs' batter looking to end the scoring chance.
  • Western Carolina broke open the scoreless tie in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Myra Twitty legged out a double. Rice followed with a double of her own to left field, picking up an RBI when pinch-runner Claudia Riddle scored.
  • Chattanooga tied the game in the bottom of the frame to force the 10th inning.
  • Again, Western Carolina took the lead in the top of the 10th. With Pate placed on second, thanks to the international tie-breaker rule, Brooklynn Brewington came through with two outs with an RBI single up the middle scoring Pate.
  • Chattanooga tied the game in the bottom of the 10th and then an RBI single past second base earned the Mocs the walk-off win.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Rice was masterful in her loss. She tossed 10 innings, throwing over 100 pitches, and struck out five. She falls to 10-15 on the season.
  • The Catamounts had seven hits in the game while Chattanooga had 10.
  • Twitty and Pate each had a pair of hits in the game.
  • Each team stranded six base runners.

News & Notes
  • Brewington continues to lead the team in hits with 49. Huneycutt is just behind with 48.
  • Rice hit her fifth double of the season.
  • Rice now has 149 strikeouts on the season and moves into eighth in the WCU record books for strikeouts in a season.
  • The 10 innings pitched by Rice is the second time in her career she has pitched 10 innings. She also pitched 10 against Appalachian State on Mar. 23, 2021. It also ties for second in the WCU record books for most innings by a Catamount pitcher in a game.
  • The 10-inning game against Chattanooga is the second time the two teams have played to 10 innings in the SoCon Championships. The Mocs defeated the Catamounts 5-4, in 10 innings, in 2015.
  • This was the fifth extra-inning game for the Catamounts this season.
