GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 6 seed Western Carolina defeated No. 7 seed ETSU 3-2 to eliminate the Buccaneers in the first game on day two of the Southern Conference Softball Championship on Thursday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

WCU (19-33) advances to play later Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against No. 4 seed Furman. That contest will be an elimination game.

Turning Point
Western Carolina scored three early runs, one in the first, benefited from a two-run home run by Bailey Huneycutt, and weathered a two-run fifth by the Bucs to advance in the tournament.

How it Happened
  • The Catamounts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Huneycutt hit a one-out single, moved to second off a groundout, and scored courtesy of an RBI single by Addie Pate.
  • Huneycutt was in the scoring mix again in the third inning. Brooklynn Brewington drew a lead-off walk leading to Huneycutt sauntering up and blasting a two-run home run to left field.
  • ETSU made things interesting by scoring two runs in the fifth from a two-RBI double.
  • Catamount starting pitcher Tessa Juett sat down six of the next ETSU batters, including sitting the Bucs down in order in the top of the seventh to help WCU preserve the lead.

 Inside the Box Score
  • Juett tossed her ninth complete game on the season and saw her first action in the SoCon tournament. She seemed at ease in the circle giving up two runs on six hits and struck out five. She improves to 5-11 on the season.
  • Western Carolina had seven hits in the game.
  • Huneycutt was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Lindsay Perillo also had two hits in the contest.

News & Notes
  • Huneycutt took over the lead for hits on the team with 50 on the year. She is one hit shy of tying her season-high of 51 which she hit in her junior campaign in 2021.
  • Juett tossed her first complete game since her win in the circle in the 6-2 victory over Presbyterian on April 19.
  • Huneycutt now has 104 career RBI and is three shy of moving from third place in the WCU record books to second.
  • Huneycutt's 50 RBI on the season is for a tie for third place in the record books.
  • Western Carolina has now won six of the last seven meetings against ETSU.
