Catamounts Open Season With 1-1 Draw

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Western Carolina women's soccer opened the 2022 season with a 1-1 tie at Mount St. Mary's Thursday at Waldron Family Stadium.
 
The two teams played 90 minutes as overtime periods have been abolished, per the NCAA, in regular season matches this season.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Sophomore Naya Marcil led the Catamounts with seven shots, three on goal.
  • Rookie goalkeeper Leanne Trudel got the start in goal allowing one goal and recording three saves.
  • Mount St. Mary's Nichole Wilson scored the Mountaineers goal.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina took the early lead from an own goal. The Catamounts sent a corner kick inside the box, and after a scrum in front of the goal, a Mount St. Mary's player kicked the ball in its own goal at the 23:49 mark.
  • In only its second shot of the contest, Mount St. Mary's tied the match in the 34th minute as Wilson took a pass from the left side and sent it past Trudel.
  • Marcil had one last second shot, just as time expired, but the Mountaineers' goalie Arden Lembryk earned the save to preserve the tie for Mount St. Mary's.
  • The Catamounts ended the contest with 20 shots in the contest with eight shots on goal.
  • Seven of Western Carolina's 19 shots either hit the cross bar or sailed over the goal.
  • Mount St. Mary's had seven shots in the contest with four shots on goal.
 
 News & Notes:
  • The 1-1 tie to open the season is the first time in program history the Catamounts have opened a season with a tie.
  • Trudel got her first start in goal for the Catamounts to open the 2022 season. She was the only freshman to earn a start to open the season.
  • Three other Catamount freshmen got their first start as a Catamount against Mount St. Mary's: Isabella DeMarco, Ava Robitaille and Milla Syska.
  • The 20 shots in the match by WCU is tied for 25th in the WCU record books for shots in a match.
  • The seven shots by Marcil are tied for fifth in the Catamount record books for shots in a match. 
 Upcoming:
  • Western Carolina continues its road trip through Maryland traveling to Annapolis, Md. Sunday to take on Navy. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
