ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In a strong defensive effort on both sides, Western Carolina women's soccer and Navy ended its match Sunday afternoon in a 0-0 tie at Glen Warner Soccer Facility.

The two teams played 90 minutes as overtime periods have been abolished, per the NCAA, in regular season matches this season.

Individual Leaders:
  • Senior goalkeeper Melody Mezzina picked up her first start of the season registering a shutout and had two saves in the contest.
  • Alexa Riddle, Amanda Graziano and Rylee Rives each had two shots for the Midshipmen.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts biggest chance to score was in the 80th minute when Navy was called with a handball. The penalty kick, taken by Rea Syska, was saved by the Midshipmen goalie in the bottom right.
  • At the 76th minute, Navy had one of its best chances of the match to score as Mezzina was pulled outside the box and Midshipmen Amanda Graziano hurried her shot and it sailed over the top of the goal. Mezzina has played out all match and forcing Navy players to try and play the ball long.
  • In the 54th minute, Mezzina kept Navy off the board with a beauty of a play. The Midshipmen took a shot about 15 yards out on the left side, but Mezzina came out in the corner of the box to deny the scoring attempt and pick up the save.
  • Western Carolina ended the contest with five shots, three in the second half, while Navy had nine shots. The Catamounts had one shot on goal, off the penalty kick attempt, while the Midshipmen had two.
  • The Catamounts and Midshipmen had a total of five shots in the first half with WCU recording two and Navy three. The Midshipmen was the only team to have a shot on goal which resulted in a save for Catamount goalie Melody Mezzina.
