CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer dropped its home-opening match to No. 18 Clemson Thursday, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1,212, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.  
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Clemson's Hal Hershfelt scored a pair of goals for the Tigers.
  • The Tigers' Renee Lyles had a goal and an assist while Megan Bornkamp recorded two assists. 
  • Western Carolina goalkeeper Melody Mezzina had seven saves in the first half.
  • Catamount rookie goalie Leanne Trudel replaced Mezzina in the second half, in goal, and notched five saves. 
  • Freshman Isabella DeMarco has three shots, one on goal, in the match.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Clemson scored two goals in the first half and four in the second. 
  • Western Carolina was held without a shot in the first half recording six in the second, three on goal. 
  • Clemson notched 26 shots in the contest and had 12 corner kicks. 
 
 
News & Notes:
  • Mezzina's seven saves in the contest were a season-high. She was one save away from tying her career-high of eight set against Liberty in 2021. 
  • Western Carolina's 12 saves in the match are tied for fifth in the WCU record books.  
  • The 1,212 in attendance eclipses the mark of 1,189 set against College of Charleston on Oct. 13, 2006.
