Catamounts Weather Lightning Delay to End Deadlocked in Tie with UT Martin

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina and UT Martin battled through an over two over lightning delay, before being able to play the second half, to end the match deadlocked in a 0-0 tie Saturday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.  
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Catamount senior goalkeeper Melody Mezzina played 78 minutes of shutout soccer, in goal, and notched five saves.
  • Freshman goalie Leanne Trudel closed out the match in goal for the Catamounts playing the final 11:17 to help secure the shutout.
  • UT Martin rookie goalie Poppie Bastock was a thorn in the Catamounts side registering 11 saves in the contest.
  • Abbie Lainhart had five shots, four on goal.
  • Naya Marcil had four shots with three on goal.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts had 12 shots in the first half testing the Skyhawks freshman goalie Bastock including three shots in succession that she turned away.
  • For the match, the Catamounts had 17 shots with 11 shots on goal.
  • Western Carolina spent 41 percent of the match on UT Martin's side of the field.
  • UT Martin ended the match with six shots, three in the first and three in the second.
 
 News & Notes:
  • Mezzina had five saves in the contest – the second most for the senior this season.
  • Mezzina has recorded two shutouts this season and had a 0.84 goals against average.
