Volleyball Opens SoCon Play with Victory over Samford

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Fifth-year senior Merry Gbel recorded a match-high 19 kills as Western Carolina opened the Southern Conference portion of its schedule with a 3-1 victory on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center on Friday night. The Catamounts won the match by scores of 15-25, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-18.
 
WCU improves to 8-5 and 1-0 while Samford drops to 5-8 and 0-1.
 
Gebel's 19 kills tie a season high for the Wildwood, Mo., native. She was joined in double figues by Brooklyn Poling with 10 kills. Destinee Dorsey was credited with a team-best 24 digs while Sydney Carlson and Sarah Janourova finished with 19 and 17 assists, respectively.
 
Gracie Lynn Butler paced Samford with 14 kills followed by Lauren Deaton and Kenya McQuirter with 11. Kayla Keshock logged a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs.
 
Tied at six in the opening set, Samford took the next three points and slowly pulled away as a Butler kill gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Samford led 15-11 at the second set media timeout, but the Catamounts chipped away at the deficit. WCU used a 3-0 spurt to pull within a point, 18-17, thanks to a block by Johnna Robinson and Brooklyn Poling. Trailing 20-19, the Catamounts closed out the set on a 6-0 run capped by a Hartsough service ace to even the match.
 
Poling and Robinson teamed up for a block which gave the Catamounts a 17-11 lead in the third set. Samford trimmed the WCU lead to three, 21-18, but WCU maintained its lead and clinched the set with an Eden Punch block.
 
With the teams tied at 12 in the fourth set, a Gebel kill sparked a 6-1 run the Catamounts used to separate themselves as WCU maintained a three-point lead for the remainder of the set. A Robinson block closed out the match.
