COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Western Carolina track & field team recorded two top-five and 13 top-10 finishes on a busy Friday of action at the Carolina Challenge hosted by South Carolina.
Riley Center led the Catamount throwers with a fifth-place result in the men's shot put. Center's top throw measured 13.81 meters (45'3.75").
In the men's 3000-meter run,
Jalen Elwell finished in sixth place with a personal best time of 8:49.90.
Matthew Martin followed in seventh place with a personal best 8:50.32.
Jonny Sherwood placed 10
th in a personal best 9:19.04.
Dohnavon Hunt finished eighth in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.44 followed by
David Miles in 10
th at 22.48.
Hunt picked up his second top-10 finish of the day in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.81 meters (22'4.25").
Tyler Rodriguez finished in ninth place in the men's triple jump thanks to a leap of 13.57 meters (44'6.25").
In the qualifying round of the men's 60-meter dash, Miles recorded the sixth-fastest time of 74 competitors as he crossed the finish line at 6.96. Miles advanced to the preliminary round and finished 15
th.
Sydney Gallant cleared a personal-best height of 3.40 meters (11'1.75") to finish in fifth place in the women's pole vault.
Jennifer Wagner placed ninth after topping out at a height of 3.20 meters (10'6").
Derica Currie finished in seventh place in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.14 meters (16'10.5").
Erica O'Neal earned a ninth-place finish in the women's triple jump thanks to her leap of 10.58 meters (34'8.5").
Alesea Caldwell recorded a personal best time of 10:50.68 in the women's 3,000-meter run as she finished 10
th.
