Mattison Sets Indoor Mile School Record at Carolina Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C.Kate Mattison set a new school record in the women's indoor mile run to highlight final day action Saturday at the Carolina Challenge.

Mattison completed the race with a time of 4:55.97, besting the previous record time of 4:56.89 set by Susie Gardner at the Tiger Classic in 1992. Mattison finished in third place in the event and later in the day posted a time of 2:18.40 in the 800-meter run.

"This was our first meet back this spring semester and you could tell with the level of rust displayed this weekend," said head coach Jesse Norman. "We did some good things in some events, Sydney (Gallant) getting a PR in the pole vault and David (Miles) getting through to the semis of the 60-meter dash. Overall Friday busted the rust for us as a program."

"Saturday was a much better day seeing Mike (Harris) and Noah (Straley) open up with a solid performance in the 400-meter dash, Imani (Boyd) clearing 1.65 meters in the high jump and highlighted by a school record in the women's mile from Kate."

Imani Boyd was the runner-up in the women's high jump, tying her indoor personal best height of 1.65 meters (5'5").

Michael Harris finished in seventh place in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 49.08. Noah Straley placed 10th as he crossed the finish line in 49.46.

Tyler Rodriguez placed seventh in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.72 meters (22'0.75"). Javon Brown was eighth, also recording a mark of 6.72 meters (22'0.75").

In the men's triple jump, Javon Brown finished seventh thanks to a top mark of 14.68 meters (48'2") followed by Javell Brown in eighth at 14.23 meters (46'8.25").

Caroline Hilliard placed ninth in the women's 3,000-meter invite division, completing the race with a time of 10:20.77.

After a weekend off, the Catamounts return to the Carolina Indoor Facility for the South Carolina Invitational on Feb. 3-4.

"We've got a couple of weeks to continue working on some things before we come back here to South Carolina for our next meet," stated Norman.
