Madison Schwarz win at No. 2 singles clinches match

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis won a hard-fought battle at Western Kentucky 4-3 Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Complex. 
 
TURNING POINT:
With the match tied 3-3, rookie Madison Schwarz won in three sets at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, to secure the contest. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Western Kentucky won the doubles match, taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, to secure an early 1-0 lead. 
  • Catamount freshman Isabella Sambola blew past her opponent at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4, to tie the match 1-1.
  • The Hilltoppers went up 2-1 after a win at No. 3 singles but again the Catamounts tied it with Jade Groen's win at No. 4 singles.
  • Groen made the match 2-2 with a victory over Sunkskrithi Damera 6-1, 6-3.
  • Western Kentucky again retook the lead with a victory at No. 5 singles, 3-2.
  • Western Carolina came back and won the last two singles matches starting with Andrea Redondo.
  • In a three-set match, Redondo defeated Samantha Martinez 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 to tie the contest up 3-3. 
  • She was down 5-4 in the third set fought back for a win.
  • This set up Schwarz to battle for victory. She saved three match points in the contest to secure her win at No. 2 singles and the match-clinching point. 
 NOTES:
  • The Catamounts open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2021 campaign. 
  • Western Carolina won its opening road match, in a season, for the first time since 2015 when the Catamounts won at North Carolina A&T 7-0 on Jan. 30, 2015.
  • Sambola, Groen, and Madison Schwarz all open the season 2-0 in singles play.  
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina takes a short trip down I-40 West to take on the No. 22 ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vols in a doubleheader on Feb. 1. The matches are scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
