Catamounts Drop Doubleheader at #22 Tennessee

Chloe Schwarz and Perez earn wins in singles

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Western Carolina women's tennis put in a solid showing against No. 22 Tennessee Wednesday falling in the doubleheader against the Lady Vols 5-2, 4-0 at te Goodfriend Tennis Center.
 
TURNING POINT:
Tennessee opened both matches sweeping the doubles matches to go up 1-0 to open both contests in the doubleheader. The Lady Vols went on to take four of the six singles matches in the first contest and then swept the three completed matches in the second contest of the doubleheader. 
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Catamounts picked up two singles victories in the first match.
  • Sophomore Angela Perez Tennessee's Leyla Britez Risso in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
  • Rookie Chloe Schwarz picked up a victory at No. 6 singles, also in straight sets, defeating Tennessee's Ashtin Hara 6-3, 7-5. 
  NOTES:
  • Chloe Schwarz's victory Tuesday, in the first match of the day, pushes her to a 2-0 record in singles. 
  • Western Carolina is 12-9 in singles play to open the season.
  • This is the second-straight season Western Carolina has picked up a win against a Power-Five opponent. It is also the first time in recorded history the Catamounts have earned two singles wins over a Power-Five. 
 
 UPCOMING:
Western Carolina will take 11 days off before taking a short trip to Asheville to take on UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. on Feb. 12.
