Catamounts Fall on the Road at Samford to Open SoCon Play

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Western Carolina women's basketball overcame a slow second quarter, but the Catamounts comeback attempt fell short dropping its firs Southern Conference game of the season 59-47 at Samford Thursday in the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Turning Point:
After building a 28-15 lead at half time, Samford weathered a Western Carolina comeback as WCU cut the Bulldog lead to three twice, 45-42 (7:34) and 50-47 (3:15) in the fourth quarter. Samford battled through it outscoring WCU 9-0 in the final 3:01 minutes of the contest including going 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Mya Love led the Catamounts with 15 points including 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
  • Kyla Allison scored 10 second half points to end the game with 14.
  • Joi Reid just missed a double-double with seven points and 11 rebounds.
  • Samford's Andrea Bailey led all scorers with 22 points.
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina was held to only four points in the second quarter and hit just two field goals. WCU shot 12.5 percent from the field.
  • The Catamounts scored 14 first-half points but roared to life scoring 32 second-half points including 18 of the 32 in the third quarter.
  •  Each team hit three three-pointers in the game.
  • Samford won the game at the free throw line hitting 18-of-23.
  • Western Carolina was 6-of-9 from the free throw line.
  • Samford just edged WCU in the rebounding department pulling down 38 to the Catamounts' 33.
  • Each team hit 19 field goals in the contest.
 
News & Notes
  • Western Carolina has now lost 19 consecutive games to Samford.
  • For the first time in two games, Love is back in the double figure scoring business with 15 against Samford.
  • Allison has now scored in double figures in the last five games and seven of the last eight.
  • Reid tied her season-high with 11 rebounds. She is the only Catamount this season to rip down double figure rebounds in a game and she has done it twice on the year.
