Catamounts Use Blocks to Sweep Spartans

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball got in the win column on Friday night using the blocks of Livi Weidmann and Logan Carr to down UNCG in three sets at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. Weidmann finished with a career-high eight blocks and Carr matched her season-high with seven rejections. 

WCU won the match by the scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-9.

Bailey Hartsough led the Catamounts on the offensive end with 13 kills to go along with six digs. Weidmann added seven kills to her stat line along with her blocks. Sarah Janourova finished with 26 assists to lead the way for WCU. Ali Morris paced the Catamounts with 13 digs as she also finished with seven kills in the match. Aviah Miller finished with a team-high three aces as WCU served up six compared to UNCG's two.
 
Aylin Baran and Hallie Cook each led the Spartans with eight kills on the offensive end for the guests. Izora Gragg led the way with 15 assists as Mallory Meers totaled 12 helpers. Mya Wood finished with a team-high 11 digs as Madeline Timmerman and America Anderson each had three blocks.
 
Western Carolina (6-13, 3-5 SoCon) got out to the quick start in the opening set with eight of the first 12 points to gain the early edge. UNCG (1-17, 0-7 SoCon) pushed back with a 10-6 run that evened the first set at 14 forcing a Catamount timeout. The set remained tight with UNCG inching ahead at 18-17 before a quick three points from the hosts allowed the Catamounts to take a 20-18 lead and force a Spartans timeout. UNCG managed to even the score at 20 before five unanswered from WCU allowed the Catamounts to take set one 25-20.

The Catamounts once again started fast with a 9-2 run out of the gates in the second set. UNCG pushed across the next four points before a 7-4 burst allowed WCU to gain the 16-10 lead at the midpoint of the middle set. WCU grabbed a seven-point lead, 20-13 before three unanswered from the Spartans led to the Catamounts calling a timeout. Western Carolina used a 5-2 run out of the timeout to claim set two 25-18 and gain the 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, WCU used a 10-3 run to create early separation and force the Spartans into the early timeout. The guests quickly cut it to a seven-point deficit at 12-5 before the Catamounts seized control and closed on a 13-4 run to claim the match in straight sets over UNCG. 

The Catamounts open the second half of SoCon play beginning on Friday, Oct. 20 when WCU travels to Furman before squaring off at ETSU the next night. Both matches are set for 6 p.m. first serve as both games will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and live stats will be provided by CatamountSports.com for both matches.
