Catamounts Sweep Day One Action at the Stinger Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Western Carolina softball swept day one action at the Stinger Classic, hosted by Alabama State, defeating Tennessee Tech 1-0, in eight innings, and downing host Alabama State 1-0 in the second game of the day at Barbara Williams Field. 
 
Inclement weather in the Montgomery, Ala. area has forced the cancellation of the remainder of the tournament for WCU.

Turning Point 
Fifth-year senior Bailey Huneycutt hit a walk-off single RBI, in extra innings, to secure the 1-0 win over Tennessee Tech. 
 
How it Happened 
  • As the game entered extra innings the International Tiebreaker Role was in enforced placing a runner on second.
  • The Golden Eagles laid down a bunt to move their runner to third, in the eighth, but back-to-back strikeouts, ended their threat.
  • Brooklynn Brewington was placed on second in the bottom of the eighth and moved to third on a single by Savannah Baldwin.
  • This set up Huneycutt's RBI single to left field.

 Inside the Box Score 
  • Sophomore Tessa Juett got the start and tossed a complete, eight inning game. She pitched a two-hit shutout fanning eight batters and walking one.
  • The Catamounts had seven hits in the game.
  • Huneycutt was 2-for-4 with an RBI including a double.
  • The Catamounts sat down 12-consecutive batters between the third and sixth innings.
  • WCU also caught two Golden Eagle runners stealing to end the first and second inning.

Turning Point 
Western Carolina scored the only run of the game in the first inning off a double steal attempt.
 
How it Happened 
  • Senior Brooklynn Brewington led off the game with a walk and stole second. She moved to third on a flyout to right field.
  • Huneycutt drew the second walk of the game.
  • Brewington and Huneycutt attempted a double steal. Huneycutt was caught stealing but Brewington scooted home for the score.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Taylor Norton got her first start as a Catamount. She tossed a complete game shutout allowing four hits and striking out two.
  • Bailey Treadway was 2-for-4 in the game.
  • The Catamounts had five hits in the contest.
  • Western Carolina sat down the first nine Alabama State batters to open the game
  • The Hornets had a perfect chance to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth opening the inning with a triple. The Catamounts made a play at home to keep Alabama State off the scoreboard.
  • Alabama State had one last gasp to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back singles, with two outs, put the tying run and go-ahead run-on base. A ground out ended the threat.

  • Rookie Kennedy Stewman got the first hit of the season for the Catamounts in the game against Tennessee Tech.
  • The Catamounts begin the year 2-0 for the fourth-straight season.
  • Western Carolina's win over Tennessee Tech halts a three-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles.
  • Huneycutt knocked in her 105th career RBI. She is one RBI behind tying former Catamount Taylor Sigmon for second place in the WCU record books.
  • Western Carolina won an opening game in extra innings for the first time in program history.
