The Basics 
Score: Presbyterian 5, Western Carolina 2; Presbyterian 6, Western Carolina 5

CLINTON, S.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games at Presbyterian Wednesday with 5-2, 6-5 losses to the Blue Hose at PC Softball Complex.

Turning Point 
Presbyterian scored five unanswered runs in the final three innings after Western Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.  
 
How it Happened 
  • After three scoreless innings, Western Carolina scored first with two runs in the top of the fourth. Samantha Reele was walked and stole second and Jeralynn Wells followed with a single to first base. Wells would steal second setting up Bethany Dobias' two RBI single to left field.
  • Presbyterian cut the Catamount lead to one, 2-1, with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Blue Hose took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Presbyterian added a run in the bottom of the sixth.

 Inside the Box Score 
  • Senior pitcher Jayme Eilers returned to the pitching circle after missing most of the 2022 season due to injury. Eilers takes the loss, falling to 0-1, tossing five innings giving up four runs on six hits. She did strikeout nine.
  • Sophomore pitcher Makenzie Martin replaced Eilers in the sixth inning. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out one.
  • The Catamounts had four hits in the game.
  • Samantha Reele got the first hit of the contest for the Catamounts – a double to left field.

Turning Point 
With the game tied 3-3, Presbyterian loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. The Blue Hose scored three runs in the inning to retake the lead and eventually take the game.
 
How it Happened 
  • Presbyterian took the early lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.
  • The Catamounts tied the game in the top of the fourth. Brooklynn Brewington got things started when she reached first base on a Blue Hose error. Back-to-back walks to Savannah Baldwin and Bailey Huneycutt loaded the bases
  • With one out, Reele hit a base-clearing three RBI double down the third base line to tie the contest 3-3.
  • Presbyterian retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Catamounts scored two in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Mattie Mentel and a score courtesy of a Presbyterian wild pitch.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • The Catamounts attempted a rally in the top of the seventh. A walk to Dobias, a single by Brooklynn Brewington and Savannah Baldwin being hit by a pitch loaded the bases for a second consecutive inning. With one out, Mentel hit an RBI groundout scoring Dobias. Brewington scored off a Blue Hose wild pitch.  
  • Western Carolina had a chance to chip into Presbyterian's 6-3 in the top of the sixth. The Catamounts loaded the bases after Bailey Huneycutt led off with a single, pinch hitter Mentel reached on an error and Bailey Treadway walked with one out. Back-to-back fly outs ended the WCU threat.
  • The Catamounts had four hits in the game.
  • Taylor Norton tossed a complete game and takes the loss falling to 1-1 on the year. She gave up six runs on 10 hits, yielded just one walk and struck out six.
 
 News & Notes 
  • Dobias' two RBI in game one against Presbyterian tied her career high.
  • Reele's three RBI in game two against Presbyterian is a career high.
  • Reele hit a double in both games against the Blue Hose.  
  • Eilers now has 262 strikeouts in her career and sits in seventh place in the Catamount record books. She needs 10 strikeouts to usurp former Catamount Ross who is in sixth place with 271.
  • Huneycutt earned her 146th hit of her career and is ranked 11th in the Catamount record books. She is chasing 10th place and needs four hits to take over the spot from Haley Pace (149).
  • Brewington stole her second and third base of the season for her 36th of her career. The single season record holder (33) is chasing the program record of 50 held by Amelia Griffin (2011-14).
 Up Next
Western Carolina will compete in it's second tournament of the season traveling to Georgia State for the Panther Invitational. The Catamounts will go up against Northern Iowa, Tennessee State, and host Georgia State.
