Elwell, Mattison Have Record Setting Saturday at Dixon Memorial Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Jalen Elwell and Kate Mattison set school records in the men's 1,000-meter run and women's mile, respectively, to highlight Saturday's action for the Western Carolina indoor track and field teams at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational hosted by Liberty.

Elwell's time of 2:28.14 broke his own previous school record of 2:32.21 set at the VMI Classic last season to finish in eighth place.

After setting the school record in the women's mile at the Carolina Challenge on Jan. 21, Mattison lowered her record time to 4:55.07. Her previous school record was 4:55.97.

"I'm excited with how we started the weekend," stated head coach Jesse Norman. "Day one (Friday) was pretty good and then we fizzled out a bit on day two (Saturday). We still had some good results highlighted by two school records, Kate in the women's mile and Jalen in the men's 1,000. I feel like we did a good job of bettering our rankings/seedings going into the SoCon Championship in a few weeks. Now it's about getting dialed in for the championships."

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Noah Straley, Dohnavon Hunt, David Miles, and Michael Harris earned a third-place finish with a season-best time of 3:17.94. Their time is the second-fastest in the SoCon this season.

Javon Brown finished in fourth place in the men's triple jump with an indoor personal best mark of 14.88 meters (48'10"). Javell Brown followed in fifth place with a top leap of 14.69 meters (48'2.5").

Hunt finished in sixth place in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93.

Teddy Ayden finished in eighth place in the men's 300-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a personal best 35.56. Jonathan Lehe finished 10th in the men's pole vault, clearing a height of 4.20 meters (13'9.25").

In the women's triple jump, Derica Currie finished in ninth place with a leap of 11.58 meters (38'0").

Competing in the women's 300-meter run, Brianna Gayle finished with a new personal best time of 42.14. Gayle's time is the fifth-fastest in the event in program history.

WCU is off next weekend before heading to VMI's Corps Physical Training Center in Lexington, Va., on Feb. 25-26 for the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
