Ipunesso Singles Win Clinches Catamounts' 4-3 Win at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Leilany Ipunesso won an epic three-set, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, match at No. four singles allowing Western Carolina women's tennis to defeat Davidson in dramatic fashion 4-3 Sunday at the Davidson Tennis Courts.   
 
TURNING POINT:
The match was tied at 3-3 with the contest boiling down to a marathon match at No. 4 singles. Ipunesso took the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-4 and showed grit by capturing the third set 6-2. Her teammates charged the court in celebration.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Davidson took the early lead in the contest winning the doubles point. The Catamounts avoided the sweep in doubles with Madison Schwarz and Isabella Sambola picking up a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
  • When the match transitioned to singles, Davidson got a win at No. 1 singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Madison Schwarz got the Catamounts on the board taking a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.
  • Davidson went up 3-1 coming out on top at No. 3 singles.
  • Western Carolina went on to take the wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to tie the contest 3-3. Sophomore Angela Perez won at No. 5 in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Andrea Redondo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
  • The wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles set up Ipunesso's match clinching win.
 
 NOTES:
  • Western Carolina halted a six-match losing streak to Davidson with the win over the Wildcats. It was the fourth win at Davidson.
  • The Catamounts closed out the three-match weekend 3-0.
  • Freshman Jade Groen leads the Catamounts with five wins in singles play.
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina opens Southern Conference play Wednesday traveling to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
