Catamounts String Together Gritty Performance in Loss to Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis put together a gritty performance in the Catamounts 5-2 Southern Conference loss at Furman Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
 
The Catamounts' two points against Furman is the most points scored against the Paladins in the 37 meetings.
 
TURNING POINT:
Furman took two of three of the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The Paladins went on to win four of the six singles contests.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The duo of Jade Groen and Andrea Redondo earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to avoid the sweep by the Paladins.
  • A Furman win at No. 6 singles put the Paladins up 2-0.
  • Sophomore Angela Perez earned the Catamounts' first point of the game when she won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
  • Western Carolina forced three of the six singles matches to three sets.
  • Freshman Jade Groen battled back from being down 2-6 in the first set, at No. 3 singles to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) for Western Carolina's second win on the match.
  • Rookie Madison Schwarz also battled back from being down in the first set, 3-6, to win set two 7-6 (7-4). She would go on and lose set three 6-3.
 
 NOTES:
  • Groen earned her sixth win in singles play.
  • Western Carolina had its three-match win streak snapped with the loss to Furman.
  • Groen and Andrea Redondo leads the team with four doubles wins on the year.
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina returns home Friday hosting Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
