LEXINGTON, Va. – Western Carolina picked up two relay wins, one individual event win, and set a school record as the Catamounts wrapped up the 2023 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Center.
The WCU men finished in second place while the Catamount women's team finished tied for fourth place.
Michael Harris picked up an individual win in the 400-meter dash as he finished the race in a new indoor personal best time of 47.87. He is the first Catamount to win the men's 400-meter dash since Devaniel Dale won consecutive titles in 2019 and 2020.
In the men's 4x400-meter relay,
Dohnavon Hunt,
Teddy Ayden,
David Miles, and Harris teamed up for an event win as they crossed the finish line with a time of 3:17.80.
The Catamounts placed five runners in the top eight of the men's 200-meter dash led by Hunt in second place with a time of 21.60. Miles finished in fifth with a time of 21.88, Ayden was sixth at 22.03,
Noah Straley placed seventh with a time of 22.50, and Harris was eight in 22.73.
WCU had three scoring positions in the men's triple jump led by
Javon Brown in second place with an indoor personal best leap of 15.08 meters (49'5.75").
Javell Brown finished third with a mark of 14.90 meters (48'10.75").
Tyler Rodriguez placed sixth with an indoor personal best jump that measured 14.04 meters (46'0.75").
Javell Brown finished in fourth place in the men's high jump, clearing a personal best height of 1.90 meters (6'2.75").
Javon Brown tied for eighth place, clearing the bar set at 1.75 meters (5'8.75").
Hunt finished fourth in men's 60-meter dash in 6.87 followed by Miles in sixth place with a time of 6.91 and Skyler Woodard in seventh at 6.96.
Jacob Thomas used a personal best throw of 15.86 meters (52'0.5") to finish in fourth place in the men's weight throw.
Riley Center placed sixth with a top throw of 14.33 meters (47'0.25").
John Davis finished fifth in the men's 800-meter run in a new indoor personal best time of 1:53.33.
Henry Stecher closely followed in sixth at 1:53.46, also a new indoor personal best.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Taja Booker,
Mekyll Robinson,
Mikayla Turner, and
Nytrinitey Jenkins teamed up for a first-place finish, winning the race with a time of 3:50.26.
Derrica Currie finished second in the women's triple jump in an indoor personal best 11.66 meters (38'3.25').
Jasmine Greene placed third with a top jump of 11.49 meters (37'8.5") with
Erica O'Neal in fifth thanks to a top distance of 11.07 meters (36'4").
Dami Shodeinde was the runner-up in the women's 60-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 8.57.
Imani Boyd finished fifth, crossing the finish line in 8.75 followed by
Shaneil Lysight in eighth at 9.12.
Kate Mattison shattered her school record in the women's 5,000-meter run as she completed the race with a time of 16:52.09 to finish in fourth place. The previous record was 17:23.51 set at last year's conference championship meet.
In the women's 200-meter dash, Jenkins earned a third-place result as she finished with a new indoor personal best time of 24.82. Robinson finished fifth with a time of 25.23.
Competing in the women's 400-meter dash, Jenkins finished fourth in a personal best 57.22 followed by Robinson followed in fifth place at 57.54.
Sydney Gallant earned a seventh-place finish in the women's pole vault as she cleared a height of 3.40 meters (11'1.75").
Toria Roundtree finished sixth in the women's weight throw with a throw of 13.95 meters (45'9.25").
Samford won both the men's and women's team championships.
WCU turns its attention to the outdoor season which is scheduled to begin next month.
