SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis freshman Jade Groen was named Southern Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Groen, from Zoetermeer, Netherlands, went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles in the Catamounts pair of matches last week.

In singles play against Furman, Groen battled and won a three-set match against the Paladin's Jess Dawson in No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), to be part of Catamount history. The Catamounts took two singles matches from perennial powerhouse Furman for the first time in the Catamount program and Groen won one of the two. She also won at No. 3 doubles with her partner Andrea Redondo against Furman's duo.

She came back later in the week to sweep her match at No. 3 singles against Gardner-Webb and won at No. 3 doubles.

She holds a team-best seven wins in singles and six wins in doubles.

Western Carolina will be back in action Wednesday when the team hosts Lees-McRae at 3 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
