Jackson, Woolbright Record Career Nights in Double Overtime Victory at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C.Tre Jackson wrote his name in the Western Carolina men's basketball record books with 47 points and Vonterius Woolbright made the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds remaining in double overtime as the Catamounts downed Wofford 95-91 on Wednesday night inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

WCU completes the series sweep of Wofford with the win and improves to 14-12 overall and 7-6 in SoCon play. With the win, the Catamounts remain undefeated in overtime contests under head coach Justin Gray at 6-0 and won their first double overtime game since a 98-96 triumph at Jacksonville on Nov. 21, 2019. Wofford drops to 13-13 and 5-8.

Jackson's 47 points are seventh-most in a single game and are the most scored by a WCU player since Kevin Martin tallied 46 points against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2002. Additionally, it represents the highest point total in a single game during the Division I era according to available records and is the top offensive performance in the SoCon this season. In the process, he tied the school record for field goals made in a game with 14 and shares the mark with seven other players. Jackson also went 8-for15 behind the arc and was a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line.

Jackson, who easily surpassed his previous career-best of 29 points against The Citadel on Jan. 25, posted the second-most points in the NCAA Division I this year, trailing just UNC Asheville's Drew Pember (48).

Woolbright also finished with a career-high as his 30-point output tops his previous best of 24 at Chattanooga last month. He also grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds. With Jackson's 47-point game and Woolbright's 30-point game, the Catamounts are the first team this season at the Division I level to have a 40-point and a 30-point scorer in the same contest.

Russell Jones Jr. also posted double figure scoring with 11 points.

B.J. Mack led Wofford with 22 points and nine rebounds. Jackson Paveletzke finished with 17 points followed by Corey Tripp with 16, Messiah Jones with 13, and Kyler Filewich with 10. Mack and Jones both snagged nine rebounds.

With the second overtime period tied at 90, Pavletzke was fouled with 30 seconds remaining and made the first of two free throws before missing the second and WCU's Bernard Pelote grabbed the defensive rebound. Woolbright then connected on the go-ahead bucket for a 92-91 WCU lead with 16 seconds left. On the ensuing Wofford possession, Jones Jr. grabbed a steal and was fouled, making one of two free throw attempts. Woolbright was fouled in the waning seconds following another WCU takeaway and made two free throws to provide the game's final score.

Deadlocked at 80 after 40 minutes, WCU trailed 84-82 with 2:31 remaining in the first overtime before grabbing an 86-84 edge with 1:23 left. A Jones layup with 23 seconds left knotted the score at 86 to head to the extra session.

Corey Tripp started the scoring 12 seconds into the game as the Terriers led by as many as 11 points in the opening half. Wofford carried a 37-32 lead into halftime.

A Paveletzke layup gave Wofford a 43-32 lead with 18:08 remaining in the second half and Wofford led by five, 56-51, at the midpoint of the frame. After a Mack free throw gave the hosts a game-high 13-point lead, 70-57 with 6:32 to play, the Catamounts trimmed their deficit to seven, 72-65, at the under-four media timeout. Trailing 75-68, WCU used a 7-0 run to even the contest at 75 with 1:58 left. The Terriers led 80-77 after a Paveletzke three-point play with 1:01 to go, but Jackson sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining.

For the game, WCU finished 32-for-76 (42.1 percent) from the field, 11-for-31 (35.5 percent) behind the 3-point line, and 20-for-26 (76.9 percent) at the free throw line. The Catamounts also held a slim 42-41 rebounding advantage. Wofford was 36-for-70 (51.4 percent) from the field, 3-for-15 (20 percent) behind the arc, and 16-for-21 (76.2 percent) at the free throw line.

WCU remains on the road this weekend, heading to chromatic rival Furman on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off. Saturday's game will be televised over-the-air on the Nexstar family of stations (check local listings) and will be available through ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with audio on the Catamount Sports Network.
