Catamounts Drop Pair of Games to USC Upstate

Taylor Norton hits first home run of Catamount career

The Basics

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of mid-week games to USC Upstate 6-2, 5-1 Wednesday at Cyrill Stadium.

Turning Point 
With USC Upstate clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Spartans put up an insurance run and then some with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
 How it Happened 
  • USC Upstate scored a run in the second and one in the third to lead 2-0.
  • Western Carolina trimmed the Spartan lead to one with a run in the top of the fifth. Three consecutive singles by Natalie Henry, Kennedy Stewman and Brooklynn Brewington loaded the bases. Morgan Maddaluna's RBI groundout pushed Henry across for the score.
  • The Spartans put the game out of reach scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Catamounts did get a run back scoring in the top of the seventh. Brewington knocked a one out double to centerfield and moved to third on a groundout by Maddaluna. Bailey Huneycutt blasted an RBI single to left field scoring Brewington.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Tessa Juett got the start tossing a complete game and falling to 1-3 on the season. She game up six runs on seven hits and struck out four.
  • Brewington was 3-for-4 in the game.
  • The Catamounts outhit USC Upstate eight to seven and stranded eight base runners.

Turning Point 
USC Upstate scored four unanswered runs over the first four innings.
 
 How it Happened 
  • The Spartans scored a run in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth before the Catamounts got on the board.
  • Taylor Norton hit a one out home run, in the top of the sixth, to get WCU in the scoring column.
  • USC Upstate added a run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
 Inside the Box Score 
  • Norton got the start in the circle tossing two innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out one. She falls to 2-2 on the season.
  • Sophomore Makenzie Martin replaced Norton. She closed out the game with four innings of work giving up two runs on two hits and struck out two.
  • The Catamounts had two hits in the game one from Brewington and one from Norton.
 
News & Notes
  • Brewington is on an eight-game hitting streak.
  • Huneycutt earned her 112th RBI of her career and continues to sit in second place in the WCU record books. She is chasing Hunter Gibbons who ended her career with 129.
  • Norton hit the first home run of her Catamounts career in game two against USC Upstate.
 
 Up Next
Western Carolina will take a few days off before heading to the West Coat for a week in California. Their adventure begins Mar. 7 with a single game against UC San Diego.
