CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina track & field teams earned three event wins and recorded several personal bests Saturday, the final day of the Catamount Classic at the Catamount Athletics Complex.
Michael Harris tied his men's 400-meter dash personal record of 47.62 as he took the event victory.
Elias Barton placed ninth with a time of 49.76.
Jonny Sherwood won the men's 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:50.24, outdueling ETSU's Abdul Jaber in a final lap battle.
Javon Brown won the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.96 meters (49'1"), besting his brother
Javell Brown who placed second with a top jump of 14.76 meters (48'5.25").
Tyler Rodriguez finished eighth thanks to a jump of 13.55 meters (44'5.5").
Javell Brown earned his second podium finish of the day with a third-place finish in the men's high jump. Brown cleared the bar set at 1.95 meters (6'4.75").
WCU's men's 4x400-meter relay team of
Noah Straley,
Elias Barton,
David Miles, and Harris closed out the meet with a second-place finish. The quartet finished the race in 3:14.97.
John Davis ran the third-fastest 800-meter run time in program history at 1:50.78, which is also a new personal best. He finished the race in third place.
Henry Stecher finished in fifth place with a time of 1:53.39.
Riley Center's new personal best throw of 14.71 meters (48'3.75") earned him a third-place result in the shotput.
Jacob Thomas earned seventh with a top mark of 13.94 meters (45'9").
In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the team of Skylar Woodard, Miles, Harris, and
Teddy Ayden finished in fourth place with a time of 41.44. Miles also scored a fifth-place result in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.51. Ayden was eighth at 10.76.
Nytrinitey Jenkins finished in second place in the women's 400-meter dash, completing the race with a time of 55.86.
Mikayla Turner was seventh, crossing the finish line with a new personal best 57.51.
Dami Shodeinde was the runner-up in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.32.
Imani Boyd placed fourth, crossing the finish line in 14.39.
Derica Currie led three WCU student-athletes in the top six of the women's triple jump with a third-place result. Currie had a top mark of 11.46 meters (37'7.25).
Jasmine Greene finished fourth thanks to her jump of 11.34 meters (37'2.5").
Erica O'Neal was sixth with a leap of 11.11 meters (36'5.5").
Kate Mattison finished third in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.52.
Caroline Hilliard was 10
th with a time of 2:20.95.
Sadler Miller, who also competes for the WCU women's golf team, finished in third place in the women's high jump with a new personal best height of 1.60 meters (5'3"). Boyd earned her second fourth-place result of the day as she cleared 1.55 meters (5'1").
Briana Gayle was fourth in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.07.
Mallory Lowe finished in fourth place in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a finishing time of 1:09.79. Shodeinde followed closely behind, crossing the finish line in a new personal best of 1:10.58.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Jasmine Smith, Turner, Mattison, and Jenkins earned a fourth-place result with a time of 3:55.09.
The Catamounts head to the Georgia Tech Invitational next Friday and Saturday for the final tune-up prior to hosting the 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Championship on May 8-9.
