WCU Claims SoCon Series over The Citadel on Senior Day

Zach Ketterman doubled four times, Pascanel Ferreras drove in five in the winning effort

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina scored runs in seven of the eight innings in which it took swings including five multi-run frames as the Catamounts powered past The Citadel 17-9 in Sunday's Senior Day home finale at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.

Zach Ketterman doubled four times in a 4-for-4, three RBI effort with Pascanel Ferreras legging out a double in a 3-for-5, five RBI performance in helping to pace the Catamounts. Brandon Butterworth bounced a three-run home run off the yellow piping that adorns the top of the outfield fence for three RBI in a four-hit, 4-for-5 day at the plate.

Landen Morrison singled three times with two runs driven in with James Hinson doubling in a two-hit offensive performance with Jack Spyke also legging out a two-base hit, reaching twice by adding a walk and driving in one.

Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first inning after The Citadel hit two of their season-best five home runs, WCU trimmed the deficit back to one with a two-out rally including a run-scoring double by Ketterman and a throwing error on a dropped third strike allowing him to scamper home with the second run. A two-run single to left by Ferreras pushed WCU in front in the home half of the second inning before Butterworth's second homer of the series – a three-run shot to right-center – gave the Catamounts a 7-3 lead through three complete.

The two teams traded solo markers in the fourth inning before a fourth Bulldog home run that ricocheted off the left-field foul pole made it a one-run game at 8-7 and the fifth round-tripper that gave the Bulldogs back a one-run edge, 9-8, to cap a five-run top of the fifth inning.

WCU responded quickly, though, loading the bases ahead of Ferreras who knocked the first of three-straight doubles for the Catamounts, plating three and pushing the Catamounts back in front. Ketterman and Spyke followed with the subsequent two-base hits and WCU led 13-9 through five.

The home squad tacked on a solo marker in the seventh inning before capping scoring in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ketterman and a two-run single to right-center by Morrison to provide the final tally.

Freshman Ryan White (5-0) earned his fifth victory of the season in relief, tossing a team-long 2.1 innings as the Catamounts sent nine pitchers to the mound in the series finale. The Randleman, N.C., product struck out one while scattering two base hits while retiring seven out of the bullpen. Also among WCU's effective relief work was an inning of hitless, scoreless relief by southpaw Adam Quincy with Corey Bright striking out one in tossing an inning with Cole Beverlin turning in a 1-2-3 ninth on eight pitches.

The Citadel (22-25, 7-11 SoCon) also used nine pitchers on Sunday with reliever CJ Van Slooten (1-2) saddled with the loss after allowing two runs – one earned – with a walk, facing just two batters in the pivotal fifth inning. Reliever Tyler Jones struck out two in an inning of hitless, scoreless relief with Connor Cummiskey's second appearance of the weekend slowing WCU, allowing a run on two hits in two innings.

The Bulldogs' 10 hits were spread between five different players with Noah Mitchell homering twice and doubling in a 3-for-5, three-RBI effort. Thomas Rollauer hit a three-run homer down the left-field line in a 3-for-4, three RBI performance with a walk to reach for a fourth time in the loss. Sawyer Reeves (2-for-5) and Crosby Jones (1-for-4) also homered and accounted for three combined RBI.

Western Carolina (21-29, 8-12 SoCon) opens the final week of the regular season on Tuesday with the first of four-straight road games against Power Five competition, traveling to Athens, Ga., to face the Georgia Bulldogs at Foley Field. The first pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the SEC Network+ (paid subscription required). WCU then heads west for a three-game, Thursday through Saturday, series at Pac-12 member Oregon State.
