Three Catamounts Named CSC Academic All-District

Zach Ketterman collects his second career honor; Adam Quincy, Nick Torres also recognized

Cullowhee, N.C. – Three Western Carolina baseball student-athletes in infielder Zach Ketterman, left-handed pitcher Adam Quincy and right-handed pitcher Nick Torres were each honored Tuesday as the trio was named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Team as selected and announced by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team aims to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Selections to the 2023 Academic All-District® teams were made from nominations submitted by the sports information professionals at each NCAA member institution. Honorees were required to have posted a 3.50 or better GPA, completed at least two semesters at their current school, played in at least half their team's competitions, and be considered a starter or key contributor. Freshmen and student-athletes who have transferred in the last year were ineligible, except for graduate transfers who are eligible.

All three of WCU's players advance to the Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All- America® honorees will be announced June 7.

A three-year starter at third base for the Catamounts, Zach Ketterman is batting .277 (53-for-191) with 27 extra-base hits including a team-leading 17 doubles – tied for third in the SoCon – adding a triple, and nine home runs. He has scored 47 runs to rank tied for the team lead, while his 50 RBI are second on the team and tied for sixth in the SoCon entering the final week of the regular season. The Biglerville, Pa., product has collected 12 multi-hit games and leads the squad with 13 multiple-RBI efforts this season. Defensively, he's been a part of turning nine double-plays.

Ketterman earns his second Academic All-District honor over the past two seasons, just the second WCU baseball player to collect multiple all-district plaudits in joining LHP Tyler Sexton in 2007 and 2008. He was also selected to wear the coveted Leggett No. 7 Legacy jersey by the WCU coaching staff at the start of the 2023 season.

Ketterman boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.826 while majoring in finance with a concentration in general finance and minor in sport management. He is a two-time SoCon Academic Honor recipient (2020-21, 2021-22), earned Spring 2022 Academic All-SoCon honors, and has twice received a SoCon Commissioner's medal.

Nick Torres is a graduate transfer from Woodstock, Ga., who began his collegiate career at LIU Brooklyn before finishing his eligibility this season at WCU. He enters the final week of the regular season having made 15 appearances with four starts, posting a 3-3 record and a 3.52 collective ERA with 18 runs allowed, 15 of which were earned. He has recorded 32 strikeouts against just 10 walks while limiting the opposition to a .270 batting average against. Torres earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors on March 27 after tossing six solid relief innings in the SoCon-opening 10-4 road victory at UNCG. He struck out seven against just one walk while limiting the Spartans to two hits over six scoreless innings, his longest outing in a Catamount uniform that was matched in his first start for WCU the following week at Mercer.

Torres carries a 3.50 GPA in WCU's sport management Master's program.

Adam Quincy was eligible as a second-year freshman after enrolling in WCU for the 2021-22 academic year but sitting out the 2022 season, carrying a freshman playing status on the field this season. The southpaw from Seymour, Tenn., has made 17 relief appearances this season with a 3.79 ERA over 19.0 innings of work with eight strikeouts against nine walks. He's only allowed eight earned runs on 16 hits, limiting opponents to a .232 batting average against.

Quincy carries a 3.738 cumulative GPA while majoring in finance.

After today's announcement of both the baseball and softball awards, Western Carolina has put 22 student-athletes on the CSC Academic All-District teams this season including six from women's soccer, five from football, four from softball and volleyball, three from women's basketball, and one women's tennis player.

Five Southern Conference schools and 16 baseball student-athletes were represented among the Academic All-District selections including Wofford (5), Mercer (4), WCU (3), ETSU (2), and The Citadel (2).

Western Carolina (21-29) plays its next four on the road to conclude the regular season ahead of the 2023 Southern Conference Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases with all four coming against Power Five conference opponents. WCU visits Georgia in Athens on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the SEC Network+ before traveling to face No. 10 Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., in a Thursday through Saturday series.
