Karen Glover today announced her squad's 2023 schedule which opens in late August and features matches against Power Five foes Florida State, Georgia, Clemson, and TCU ahead of a 16-match Southern Conference slate.
The Catamounts host USC Upstate in an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. on Ingles Court inside the Ramsey Center.
WCU begins its 2023 regular season action against Florida State on Friday, Aug. 25 in Athens, Ga., at a tournament hosted by Georgia. The Catamounts face the host Bulldogs and Connecticut the following day. The Catamounts then spend Labor Day weekend close by at the Clemson Invitational against the host Tigers on Friday, Sept. 1 before facing Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday, Sept. 2 and South Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 3 at Jervey Gym.
A mountain rivalry is renewed on Tuesday, Sept. 5 as the Catamounts welcome UNC Asheville at 6 p.m. for the team's home opener.
WCU remains in-state the following weekend, heading to former SoCon foe Elon to face the Phoenix and NC Central on Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9. The Catamounts close out the nonconference portion of the schedule at the Fight in the Fort tournament hosted by TCU in Fort Worth, Texas on Sept. 15-16. WCU faces Hawai'i along with the host Horned Frogs.
The SoCon schedule begins with three of the first four matches played in Cullowhee beginning with the league opener against reigning regular-season champion ETSU on Thursday, Sept. 21 with a home contest against Furman the following night. The conference opener on the road is at The Citadel on Wednesday, Sept. 27, before a home contest against Mercer to close out September.
A road trip to Samford (Oct. 6) and Chattanooga (Oct. 7) opens the October calendar followed by home contests against Wofford (Oct. 12) and UNCG (Oct. 13) to conclude the first half of the league schedule. The Catamounts hit the road for three straight against Furman (Oct. 20), ETSU (Oct. 21), and Mercer (Oct. 26) before hosting The Citadel on Homecoming weekend, Saturday, Oct. 28.
The season's final month sees the Catamounts close out the home portion of the schedule with a visit from Chattanooga on Friday, Nov. 3 before celebrating Senior Night on Saturday, Nov. 4 against Samford. WCU concludes the regular season with a road trip to Wofford (Nov. 10), and UNCG (Nov. 11).
The SoCon Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 at Wofford's Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
Coming off a third-place finish in the Southern Conference a season ago, Western Carolina returns nine letterwinners from the 2022 squad that won 20 matches. The Catamounts earned a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), winning two matches to advance to the quarterfinals where they hosted the first postseason match in program history.
