Glover Promotes Svehla to Associate Head Coach

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball head coach Karen Glover announced the promotion of Taylor Svehla to associate head coach on Tuesday. Svehla joined the Catamounts staff in February of 2022 serving as an assistant coach for Glover last season at WCU.

"Taylor has been a great addition to our program and has a very bright future as a coach! She is an excellent trainer and recruiter, and I am excited that she is part of our staff," commented head coach Karen Glover.

In her first season in Cullowhee, Svehla (pronounced suh-VEY-lah) helped the Catamounts reach the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2002 season and fifth-year senior Merry Gebel earned AVCA All-American and SoCon Player of the Year honors. Additionally, the Catamounts appeared in the postseason for the first time in program history, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Tournament by scoring a pair of postseason victories and hosting the quarterfinal match against Southern Miss.

Svehla helped WCU become the top blocking team in the Southern Conference with 2.33 blocks per set. She mentored Eden Punch, who led the league with 129 total blocks and ranked fourth with 1.06 blocks per set.

A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Assistant Coaches Committee, Svehla made previous coaching stops at South Dakota State and Butler before joining Glover's staff at WCU.

Western Carolina begins its 2023 season with exhibition action on August 19 when the Catamounts welcome USC Upstate to Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center before opening the regular season on Aug. 25 against Florida State as part of the Classic City Clash, hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens.
