Volleyball Heads to Clemson Invitational on Friday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball returns to the court beginning on Friday as the Catamounts travel to the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C. hosted by Clemson University. WCU opens the weekend on Friday at 5 p.m. on ACC Network Extra against the host Tigers. The Catamounts continue the weekend on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Green Bay before wrapping up the tournament on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against South Alabama.

Ali Morris led the Catamounts in the opening weekend at the Classic City Clash hosted by University of Georgia. Morris totaled a team-high 33 kills including her second career double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. Logan Carr led the defensive end with 12 blocks including seven against UConn. In Saturday's tight five-set battle with UConn, the Catamounts had double-doubles from Morris (18 K, 15 D), Bailey Hartsough (10 K, 14 D), Sarah Janourova (24 A, 13 D) and Katie Boney (19 A, 14 D).

Clemson posted wins on opening weekend over Middle Tennessee and Wofford while dropping a 3-1 decision against South Carolina on Wednesday. Clemson was picked 11th in the ACC Preseason Poll led by Mckenna Slavik being named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. The Tigers have been led offensively by Kennedy Wagner who tallied 42 kills on the season while Azyah Dailey recorded 32 kills. Slavik leads the Tigers with 95 assists and also recorded 28 digs on the defensive end. Devan Taylor led Clemson thru the opening three matches with 49 digs.
 
Green Bay posted a 2-1 record on the opening weekend of the 2023 season following wins over South Dakota State and Winthrop. The Phoenix were tabbed third in the Horizon League poll prior to the start of the 2023 season. Hannah Vanden Berg and Cora Behnke led the way on the offensive end for Green Bay with 28 kills apiece in the opening three matches. Calli Gentry totaled 99 assists in the opening weekend. Tiffany Paalman tallied a team-high 13 blocks to pace the Phoenix on the defensive end.
 
The Catamounts conclude the weekend at the Clemson Invitational with a matchup against South Alabama as the Jaguars posted a 3-0 record to begin the 2023 season battling Stephen F. Austin, Jackson State and Tulane. The Jaguars were picked to win the West Division Title of the Sun Belt and also earned 10 first place votes from the league's preseason poll. South Alabama had three preseason All-Sun Belt honorees led by Kailey Keeble who was tabbed setter of the year. Maddie Soboleski led South Alabama with 47 kills and Hannah Maddux tallied 44 kills on the opening weekend for the Jaguars. Keeble tallied a team-high 133 assists in the opening three matches. Niki Capizzi led the way for South Alabama with 24 blocks in the opening weekend.
 
Western Carolina and Clemson have met 32 times in the program's histories with the most recent meetings coming with a doubleheader to kick off the 2021 spring season that saw the Tigers earn both wins. WCU and Green Bay are slated to meet on Saturday for the first time in the two school's history. The Catamounts have taken two of the three meetings from South Alabama with the team slated to meet for the first time since 2003 on Sunday. 
 
Following Sunday's matchup with South Alabama, the Catamounts return to Cullowhee for their home opener as WCU is set to battle UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m… The matchup with the Bulldogs will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required).
