Volleyball Set to Battle TCU & Hawaii at Fight in the Fort

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball concludes its nonconference slate with a trip to the Lone Star state for the Fight in the Fort hosted by TCU. WCU begins the weekend with a 3 p.m. first serve against Hawaii before battling the host Horned Frogs on Saturday night at 7 p.m. with both matches taking place at Schollmaier Arena on the TCU campus.

The matchup with TCU will be shown on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live stats available online through CatamountSports.com.

The Catamounts are set to close out nonconference play with a trip to Texas for the Fight in the Fort hosted by TCU. Western Carolina went 1-1 at the Phoenix Volley for Unity last time out with a victory over N.C. Central and a setback to Elon. Junior Bailey Hartsough led the Catamounts over the weekend with 28 kills and a .304 hitting percentage as she also tallied 25 digs on the defensive end. Hartsough (17 kills, 16 digs) along with sophomore Ali Morris (11 kills, 14 digs) and junior Sarah Janourova (23 assists, 12 digs) each had double-doubles in the victory over NCCU.

Hawaii begins the weekend with a 5-3 record as the Rainbow Wahine battle host TCU on Thursday before squaring off with WCU on Friday afternoon. Hawaii has a victory in 2023 over #13 San Diego and has been ranked in the AVCA top 25 as high as #23 last week. The Rainbow Wahine are led by Amber Igiede who's totaled 110 kills along with 41 blocks thru Hawaii's first eight contests. Caylen Alexander has tallied 101 kills along with a team-high 11 aces thus far in 2023. Kate Lang leads Hawaii with 338 assists thus far in 2023 with eight aces and 75 digs. Talia Edmonds leads Hawaii defensively with 115 digs. Hawaii was tabbed atop the Big West Preseason Poll earning 10 of 11 first place votes from the league coaches led by a trio on the preseason all-conference team of Alexander, Igiede and Lang. The Rainbow Wahine are under the direction of Robyn Ah Mow who's in her sixth year at the helm for Hawaii.

TCU comes into the weekend with a 4-4 record after claiming wins over Utah State and Texas A&M last time on the floor. The Horned Frogs have battled with #2 Wisconsin and #7 Minnesota during the start of the 2023 season. TCU is led by Melanie Parra and Jalyn Gibson on the offensive end as Parra has 114 kills while Gibson has totaled 103 thus far. Riley Buckley has a team-best 265 assists for TCU. Brianna Green and Sarah Sylvester lead the way on the defensive end with 39 and 36 blocks respectively. The Horned Frogs were tabbed fourth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll under the direction of second year head coach Jason Williams as TCU had Audrey Nalls on the Preseason Team.

Hawaii has claimed the only prior meeting between the two schools earning a 3-0 win over the Catamounts during the 2017 season. Saturday's matchup with the Horned Frogs marks the second straight year the schools have faced off with TCU earning a four-set win a season ago in Raleigh, N.C… In the matchup with TCU, Livi Weidmann totaled eight kills as Bailey Hartsough had seven kills with Sarah Janourova tallying a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.
 
Following Saturday's matchup with TCU, the Catamounts begin Southern Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 21 when WCU faces off with ETSU before welcoming Furman to Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center the next night. Both matches will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and live stats will be provided by CatamountSports.Com.
