Catamounts Close Out Opening Weekend in Home Tournament

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis wrapped up the opening weekend of its fall season on Sunday with dominant performance on the singles and doubles courts at the Catamount Athletics Complex. WCU was joined by Gardner-Webb and Kennesaw State as each team played each other in singles and doubles.

The matchups were condensed on Sunday due to morning rains in the Cullowhee area and the teams were unable to get on the courts till the 1pm hour. Western Carolina battled Kennesaw State in singles action and Gardner-Webb in doubles to conclude the weekend.

The Catamounts opened the day with a pair of doubles victories over Gardner-Webb as the pairs of Isabella Sambola and Chloe Schwarz along with Leilany Ipunesso and Angela Perez got WCU the early wins.

The final action of the weekend came in a singles matchup with Kennesaw State and the Catamounts controlled the matchup taking four of six matches from the Owls. Jade Groen along with Ipunesso and Sambola each grabbed straight-set wins on Sunday afternoon along with Perez coming back in a third set tiebreak to claim the win.

WCU will next be on the court beginning on Friday October 13th with the Spartan Fall Invitational hosted by SoCon foe UNCG. The tournament is scheduled to be contested over three days in Greensboro.
