Women's Basketball Opens Season with First Official Practice

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball officially opened preseason practice today ahead of the 2023-24 season. Under the direction of Head Coach Kiley Hill the Catamounts featuring nine returners and six new faces hit the court on Monday for the first time at 7:30 a.m…

The team worked thru various drills which included layup lines, defensive work along individual groups working on different skills and drills. WCU also spent time at the free throw line and 5x5 along with 4x4 competitions and transition offense and defense.

"Day one is in the books.  We have twenty-nine more opportunities over the next forty-two days to see how we can improve as a team and program foundationally.  This is only our starting point not ending, so our energy was really good but our execution was a bit to be desired.  Excited for them to see how well they can grow each day and reach their collective potential.    As we tell them, it's not how you start… it's how you finish.  I truly believe this group will consistently work to get ready to be ready!"

Fans are encouraged to come out and meet the 2023-24 men's and women's basketball teams as Catamount Basketball presents: A Night in the Whee brought to you by Prospect Cullowhee. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24th in the Ramsey Center with the event starting at 7 p.m… It's the first chance to meet both basketball teams and coaches. Students will have an opportunity to win great prizes throughout the night and a few lucky students will be able to compete alongside our student-athletes.

The Catamounts begin the 2023-24 season with a pair of home contests, starting with a matchup against Agnes Scott on Nov. 6 before closing out the opening week with a visit from Radford on Nov. 9. WCU's first road trip of the season is set for Nov. 13 when the Catamounts travel to Birmingham to battle the UAB Blazers.
