Catamounts Hold Off Terriers for Seventh-Straight Victory

WCU’s 19-point second-half lead stands up in 10th-consecutive home win

Cullowhee, N.C.Vonterius Woolbright and DJ Campbell both scored 18 points to lead three Catamounts in double figures as Western Carolina extended a pair of streaks on Saturday, winning its seventh-straight game on the year and pushing its home win streak to 10 in a row on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.

WCU (13-2, 2-0 SoCon) built a 19-point second-half lead before withstanding a late push by the Terriers as Wofford clawed back to within two points twice inside the game's final minute before the Catamounts secured the Southern Conference victory, 70-66. The win was WCU's third straight over Wofford over the past two seasons.

The current seven-game winning streak is the longest for WCU under head coach Justin Gray, eclipsing the six-game run to open this season. It's also the most consecutive wins for the Catamounts since also winning seven in a row in WCU's run to the SoCon Championship game back in 2011-12. With 13 wins through the first 15 games, the Catamounts are off to the best start to a year in WCU's NCAA Division I history.

Woolbright notched his 12th double-double of the season to remain tied for the most in the NCAA, adding 14 rebounds to his 18 points with five assists. The Albany, Ga., product secured the double-dip over the game's first 20 minutes, hitting the halftime locker room with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Campbell scored in double figures for the 12th time with his season-high tying 18 points, while senior Tre Jackson chipped in with a baker's dozen, finishing with 13 points with four made 3-pointers.

Russell Jones Jr. just missed double figures for WCU with eight points while Bernard Pelote scored five while boarding a season-best seven in the winning effort.

Wofford (8-7, 1-1 SoCon) put two in double figures as Corey Tripp led with 17 points and seven rebounds while post Kyler Filewich posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Dillon Bailey with nine points and Jackson Sivills scored eight for the Terrier before fouling out.

The Terriers used a five-point spurt to take their largest lead of the game at six points, 12-6, five minutes into Saturday's game. WCU responded with a 15-to-4 run to erase the deficit and grab a five-point lead of its own, 21-16, midway through the opening half that included a Pelote 3-pointer that gave the Catamounts the lead for what proved to be for good. WCU managed to build its lead to a half-high eight points and the home squad carried that margin into halftime with a 34-26 lead.

Including three 3-pointers by Jackson, WCU outscored Wofford 16-to-7 out of intermission to grab a 17-point lead, 50-33. The Catamounts eventually stretched their double-digit lead to a game-high 19, 60-41, on a pair of Campbell free throws near the midpoint of the second half. However, the Terriers then started a methodical march back and closed to within two points inside the final minute.

Wofford outscored WCU 23-to-6, pulling to within two points, 66-64, on a pair of Tripp free throws. On WCU's ensuing possession, Campbell converted a Jones Jr. dish for two tough points to regain the two-score lead. Filewich muscled his way to the hoop for two to slice the margin in half at 68-66 with just under 20 seconds to play. Wofford pressured the in-bounds play with Campbell escaping before being corralled and fouled near the midcourt stripe. The Hampton, Va., product nailed a pair of free throws to provide the final tally as the Terriers misfired on their final attempt inside the final 10 seconds to play.

Wofford was held 14 points below its seasonal average as the Terriers entered the game scoring at an 80.6 point-per-game clip. The visitors also entered with an average of 9.6 made 3-pointers per game but were held to just five treys on the day. The Catamounts edged Wofford on the boards, 45-to-41, as the two squads combined for just 12 turnovers – eight by WCU, four by Wofford.

The Catamounts played with the lead for just over 32 of the 40 minutes on Saturday.

Western Carolina hits the road for its next two in SoCon play, visiting mountain-rival ETSU on Wednesday (Jan. 10) before heading to Macon, Ga., to face the Mercer Bears next Saturday, Jan. 13 in league play. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live audio from the Catamount Sports Network and live stats linked to CatamountsSports.com.

WCU's next home game is a nationally-televised match-up against league co-leader Samford on Tuesday, Jan. 16, with a special 6 p.m. start on the CBS Sports Network. WCU will celebrate former Catamount Ronnie Carr who made the first 3-pointer in NCAA basketball history back in 1980.
