Tennis Sweeps Royals, Runs Win Streak to Seven

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis embarked on its first road trip in two weeks but was able to keep up its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, blanking the Queens Royals 7-0 at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.

Western Carolina (7-1) continued its strong play in doubles on Saturday with a 6-0 shutout by the top pair of Angela Perez and Isabella Sambola before Andrea Redondo and Jade Groen extended their win streak to seven in a row with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot to claim the initial point.

Chloe Schwarz and Madison Schwarz advanced their doubles record to 6-2 with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot after WCU locked up Saturday's first point of the match.

The Catamounts continued their momentum into singles play as Madison Schwarz dropped a single point in each set, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Groen went on to win 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, extending the Catamount lead to 3-0 before Groen's doubles partner Redondo grabbed a 6-0, 6-3 win to secure the match victory for WCU.

Chloe Schwarz secured her third, straight-set victory in singles and – her fourth overall – with a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Sambola and Perez each used a third set super tiebreaker to push the Catamounts to the 7-0 sweep of Queens.

The Catamounts continue on their road swing with a Tuesday afternoon matchup against Big South foe Gardner-Webb with the first serve set for 2 p.m. from Boiling Springs, N.C. WCU defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs 4-3 last February in Cullowhee. Gardner-Webb sits at 1-1 on the season after falling to Charlotte on Friday after tallying a season-opening win against Limestone two days prior.
