Tennis Downs Gardner-Webb, Wins Record-Breaking Eighth Straight

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- The Western Carolina Tennis women's team returns home for a few days of rest after extending its win streak to eight at the expense of the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon, 5-2. The eight consecutive wins - five coming at home and three on the road - gives the 2023-24 Catamounts the edge over the 1978-79 team which won seven in a row.

Western Carolina picked up its eighth straight doubles-point in Boiling Springs as the duo of Isabella Sambola and Angela Perez earned a 6-3 victory to open the day on court one. Jade Groen and Andrea Redondo followed with their team-leading seventh doubles victory to secure the point before Madison Schwarz and Chloe Schwarz took a 7-4 tiebreak win to earn the fourth doubles sweep of the season.

Gardner-Webb knotted the score at one with a win on court three. But the Catamount trio of Jade Groen, Angela Perez, and Isabella Sambola finished back-to-back-to-back with three, straight-set victories to clinch the day for WCU.

Madison Schwarz put forth a valiant effort on court five, rallying in the second set to earn a 7-6 (7-5) win, but would fall in the tiebreak by 10-4. Dasha Osadova made an appearance on court six, earning a 7-6 (7-3) and a 6-2 victory to claim both her fourth singles point and fourth straight-set win of the season.

The Catamounts look to finish their longest road stretch of the season this weekend as they take on Charlotte and Boston University in the Queen City. WCU takes the courts with the 49ers at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday before a neutral site matchup with the Terriers at Noon on Sunday.
