Catamounts Share Championship at Spring-Opening Oyster Shuck

Western Carolina and Samford both went undefeated through two matches

Charleston, S.C. – Western Carolina women's golf scored the three points it needed to defeat Radford in a head-to-head match-play competition on Tuesday morning as action concluded at the weather-shortened 2024 Oyster Shuck Match Play tournament at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
 
The Catamounts earned wins from sophomore Brie Mapanao, fifth-year senior Victoria Ladd, and junior Kaitlyn Wingnean to secure the necessary three out of five points to remain unbeaten through two matches. WCU redshirt junior Kayleigh Baker and junior Elizabeth Lohbauer did not finish their respective one-on-one matches Tuesday, both halting with three holes to play after the team result had been determined.
 
Western Carolina and fellow Southern Conference foe Samford both finished unbeaten in the two matches played, sharing the hardware as co-champions of this year's tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Wofford on Tuesday, likewise taking the three necessary individual matches with the remaining two pairings stopping once the victor was decided.
 
Mapanao was the first to finish, downing Radford's Macy Johnson 6 & 5, taking a six-hole lead through 13 completed holes. Wingnean also finished with a 6 & 5 victory over the McKenzie Weddle representing the Highlanders, while Ladd posted a 4 & 3 win over Radford's Shea Smith.
 
Lohbauer had a one-hole advantage over Radford's Grace Addison at 1-up through 15 holes, while Baker was down one hole also through 15 of the scheduled 18 holes when play ceased.
 
Western Carolina women's golf returns to action Feb. 23-25, at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, hosted by SoCon-foe Mercer at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Eatonton, Ga. The three-round, 54-hole event will be spread over three days, Friday through Sunday.
