Spartanburg, S.C. –
DJ Campbell scored a career-high 23 points to keep pace with the Southern Conference's leading scorer
Vonterius Woolbright, who finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season on Saturday. However, Wofford evened the season series by avenging last year's double-overtime defeat to the Catamounts in outlasting Western Carolina 88-86 in overtime at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Wofford's Jeremy Lorenz missed the backend of two free throws to keep it a two-point game with Woolbright corralling the rebound inside the final 15 seconds of overtime. After WCU's initial surge up the floor following the missed charity toss was cut off by the Terriers, WCU head coach Justin Gray took a timeout to set up a final play.
After the stoppage, the Catamounts got the entry pass into Woolbright who went one-on-one with Wofford's 6-9 post Kyler Filewich. Woolbright's step-back jumper over the outstretched arms of his defender just missed off the rim, though, as the Catamounts fell for the fifth time in their last six games – twice coming in overtime.
Campbell got off to a tremendous start on Saturday, scoring 18 of his career-best 23 points in the first half on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance from the floor that included four made 3-pointers. Woolbright sank 10 field goals in scoring 28 points, adding 10 rebounds and six assists as the Albany, Ga., product has recorded double-doubles in 14 of his last 15 games.
Russell Jones Jr. connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 17 points while
Tre Jackson hit a pair of triples as a part of his 13 points. Senior
Kamar Robertson scored five points early to get WCU going, accounting for all of WCU's bench points as only five of the nine Catamounts that played scored points in the extra-session loss.
Wofford (13-10, 6-4 SoCon) put two players in double figures with Corey Tripp finishing with 27 points on 13 made field goals while Jackson Sivills scored 13 in the win. Filewich and Quentin Meza chipped in nine apiece with Filewich pacing the Terriers with 12 rebounds including four on the offensive end.
Neither team managed more than a four-point lead through the game's opening 10 minutes until Campbell drilled a third 3-pointer coming on three consecutive possessions to give the Catamounts a half-high seven-point lead, 23-16, with 9:23 to play before the break. The Catamounts would enjoy the seven-point cushion two additional times over the opening 20, but Wofford continued to fight back, knotting the game at 39 on a late-half jumper by Tripp to send the teams to the locker room deadlocked at 39.
Wofford scored the first five points out of the halftime locker room before the Catamounts responded to tie the game at 48. After the Terriers managed to push ahead to a game-high six-point lead, 54-48, WCU embarked on an 18-to-6 run to erase the deficit and take a four-point, 66-62, lead with 8:14 to play.
Neither team held more than a one-possession lead the remainder of regulation as the score was tied four times over the final seven minutes including even at 76 at the end of 40 minutes.
Western Carolina struck first in the extra session with a layup by Woolbright. The Terriers responded with the game's next four points, pulling ahead for what proved to be good on a Tripp 3-pointer to lead 80-78. Wofford led by as many as five in overtime, pulling in front 86-81 inside the final minute. Woolbright scored WCU's final five points as the Terriers sank just two of their final four free throws, the last miss setting up the closing seconds and ultimately Woolbright's final offering.
Saturday's tight league game saw a combined 14 lead changes and a tied score 12 times. Wofford is the second-straight WCU opponent to shoot over 50 percent from the field, finishing Saturday at 57.6 percent. The Terriers were also credited with 38 rebounds including 11 on the offensive end against 26 for WCU to win the battle on the boards.
Western Carolina (16-7, 5-5 SoCon) returns home for the first of back-to-back home dates, hosting The Citadel (9-14, 1-9 SoCon) in midweek action on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs rallied from a double-digit deficit before falling at ETSU on Saturday, 62-60.
