Track and Field Finishes VMI Winter Relays Strong

LEXINGTON, VA. -- The Western Carolina track and field teams are returning to Cullowhee after collecting nine Top Five finishes including two outright event wins, and 14 personal bests during the two days of competition at the VMI Winter Relays.

Junior Damon Worley earned the top finish of day two for the Catamounts, taking a second-place finish in his first collegiate heptathlon attempt. The junior from Seneca, S.C., posted top-five finishes through six of the seven portions of the combined event. Worley led the Catamount contingent in the event, though freshmen Colby Capps and Ethan Hibberts recorded top-ten finishes as well.

In the circle, fellow freshman Austin Ramirez earned a top-five finish in the men's shot put after a launch of 14.27m that placed him fourth in the event. His toss was one of three personal bests set in the shot put as Dominick Dale and Landrey Pike set new PRs in the men's and women's event, respectively. The throws squad was responsible for six of WCU's 14 new personal bests set during the meet.

Junior jumper Cameron Pompey took a podium placement in the men's triple jump, leaping to a third-place finish in the event. Pompey was one of only three jumpers to earn a mark further than 13.60m. Freshman David Dorbin also took a top-five finish in the same event, taking fifth place thanks to a mark of 13.06m. In the high jump, Adam Ledford finished fourth after clearing 1.86m. The fourth-place finish is the best event finish for the freshman this season.

On the track, junior Henry Stecher took the best finish for the Catamounts in the mile run. Stecher cruised to a fifth-place finish thanks to a time of 4:22.44, a new personal best in the event. The Kill Devil Hills native was one of two SoCon athletes to finish in the top five.

The Catamounts will be back in action as they return to Lynchburg, Va. For the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational hosted by Liberty. That meet is scheduled to run February 9-10 before the Catamounts return to Lexington for the SoCon Indoor Championships, February 24-25.
