Catamounts Dominate Wildcats for Fifth Straight Victory

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Behind another fast start, Western Carolina women's tennis continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon by defeating Davidson 6-1 at the Catamount Athletics Complex.

Sunday's victory marks the longest win streak for the Catamounts since March 10-24, 2019, when WCU tallied six in a row late in the campaign. The win is also the first back-to-back victories over the Wildcats since 1978 when the Catamounts downed Davidson in a pair of matches during that season. It's also the first victory over Davidson in Cullowhee since March 13, 2011, when WCU earned the 4-3 win.

Davidson (3-1) opened Sunday's match by claiming a decisive 6-2 decision at the No. 2 doubles before Andrea Redondo and Jade Groen answered with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot to set up a decisive decision on No. 1 doubles. The tandem of Isabella Sambola and Angela Perez outlasted the Wildcats in the top spot with a 7-5 decision to claim the critical opening point of Sunday's action.

Chloe Schwarz made quick work of her opponent at the No. 3 spot in singles, winning in straight sets by the score of 6-3, 6-0 before her sister Madison Schwarz repeated the same scoreline at No. 5 singles to stretch WCU's lead to 3-0.

Western Carolina turned to the top spot in the lineup as Sambola dominated her singles match with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to secure the fifth straight win for the Catamounts.

Perez continued the strong play for WCU in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 decision before Groen picked up her fifth win in singles on the season by the score of 7-5, 6-2 to stretch the lead to 6-0.

The Wildcats got on the board at No. 6 singles as Davidson used a lengthy third set tiebreak at 13-11 to claim their lone point of the match, which led to a 6-1 WCU victory.

The Catamounts close out their four-match homestand on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. when WCU welcomes Young Harris to the Catamount Athletics Complex.
