Tennis Pushes Win Streak to Six on Friday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis closed out its four-match homestand on Friday with a 5-2 victory over Young Harris at the Catamount Athletics Complex.

WCU has pushed its record to 6-1 on the young season as the Catamounts have won nine of their last 11 home matches dating back to the 2023 spring season.

Western Carolina (6-1) claimed a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 doubles as sisters Madison Schwarz and Chloe Schwarz got it going for the Catamounts before Isabella Sambola and Angela Perez claimed a decisive 6-1 result to give the hosts the opening point. Andrea Redondo and Jade Groen stretched their win streak to six in a row with their victory after the doubles point was clinched at No. 3 in the lineup.

Groen made quick work of the Mountain Lions at No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-1 before Sambola won 6-1, 6-1 to advance the WCU lead to 3-0. Groen has now won her last six singles matches and has won five of those six in straight sets.

Perez finished off the win for the Catamounts with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles that pushed the WCU win streak to six in a row. Redondo continued the winning ways for the Catamounts winning 7-5, 6-1 in No. 6 singles that allowed WCU's lead to swell to 5-0.

Young Harris got on the board at No. 3 and No. 5 singles using a third set super tiebreak in each to provide the final 5-2 result for Western Carolina on Friday afternoon.

Western Carolina opens a road swing on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Catamounts make the trek to Charlotte to battle Queens University in the first of four straight on the road.
