WCU Women’s Golf Third Entering Sunday at the LCI

Sophomore Brie Mapanao leads WCU in a tie for seventh after 36 holes

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Western Carolina women's golf held its position in Saturday's second round at the Low Country Intercollegiate, trimming four strokes off its opening round 308 to shoot 304 to hit the clubhouse in third place at 612 after 36 holes. Sophomore Brie Mapanao posted a second-round score of 4-over par 76 for a two-round tally of 151 to sit in a two-way for seventh place to lead the Catamount scoring five.
 
Sunday's final round is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start with live stats available online through GolfStat. WCU's lineup begins on the front nine paired with golfers from ETSU and Richmond, the top two teams in the standings after two rounds.
 
Mapanao countered three bogeys with a birdie on the front nine to make the turn for home at 2-over par. The Quakers Hill, New South Wales, Australian product moved back to 2-over par for the round through 16 holes before back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes of the day relegated her to 4-over par 76. Mapanao has four birdies over the first two days of the tournament.
 
Junior Elizabeth Lohbauer was WCU's second-biggest gainer on Saturday, dropping three strokes from her first-round 78 to card a second-round, 3-over par 75 for a two-day total of 153. Lohbauer had four bogeys on her front nine to hit the home stretch at 4-over par. Two birdies on the par-5 14th and par-4 16th moved her back to 2-over par before a fifth bogey on No. 18 left her at 3-over for the day.
 
Rounding out WCU's scoring five were fifth-year senior Victoria Ladd down 10 spots into a tie for 24th at 155 with sophomore Sadler Miller the biggest mover, climbing 16 positions into a tie for 27th overall at 156. Miller was six strokes better over the second 18 holes. Redshirt junior Kayleigh Baker enters Sunday's final round in a tie for 35th with a two-day total of 158.
 
Ladd carded her first two birdies of the event among her final three holes on Saturday. Miller countered four bogeys with a birdie on the par-5 11th, her second birdie of the weekend. Baker had six bogeys and one double-bogey over her second 18 holes in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
 
Playing unattached as an individual, Kaitlyn Wingnean advanced three positions by knocking three strokes off her second-round score. The Alberta, Canada native is tied for 58th with a two-day score of 165, posting two of her three birdies on Saturday.
 
First-round leader and Southern Conference foe ETSU carries a one-stroke lead over second-place Richmond entering the final round, 602-to-603. WCU is in third just 10 strokes off the pace at 612 and nine strokes ahead of fourth-place Appalachian State (621) as the Mountaineers climbed three spots on Saturday. USC Upstate rounds out the top five, the biggest gainer on the day by advancing four positions.
 
For the SoCon, ETSU leads while WCU is in third place. Event-host Wofford is tied with UNCG for sixth-place with Samford ninth and The Citadel 16th.
 
Gabi Nicastro of Samford carded the only round under par in the second round with a 2-under 70 to jump 13 positions into the tournament individual lead after 36 holes at 147. Richmond's Hannah Lydic and the ETSU duo of Brianna Castaldi and Sophie Bert are tied for the runner-up spot, a stroke off the pace at 148.
