Boone, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis fell at archrival Appalachian State 6-1 on Saturday afternoon as a short-handed Catamount side delivered a scrappy showing, down two key members of the lineup.
The Catamounts inherited an early deficit in doubles after being forced to forfeit on the third court as Western Carolina was unable to field enough healthy student-athletes for a third pairing. Angela Perez and Andrea Redondo were coupled together in the two spot for the first time while Jade Groen and Madison Schwarz were reunited on court one. Play continued until the Mountaineers claimed a 6-1 victory in the second court, clinching the doubles point.
App State likewise scored a free point on the singles courts as play commenced, again due to the lack of a sixth Catamount to compete.
Facing an uphill climb, the Catamounts battled by forcing tiebreakers on three of the five courts on the day. Angela Perez was the sole member of the Purple and Gold to earn a point after taking a 10-8 tiebreaker victory on the second court. Despite valiant efforts in the first and fourth spots by Jade Groen and Andrea Redondo, the duo fell in tiebreakers by scores of 11-9 and 10-7, respectively. In addition, Dasha Osadova put forth a strong effort in her singles match on the fifth court, forcing a 7-5 decision in a set one loss to Appalachian State's Brooke Demerath.
Western Carolina returns to road action next Sunday, March 10, as it takes on their second ACC opponent of the year, Wake Forest. The match will take place in Greenville, S.C., as the Demon Deacons take the courts against the Furman Paladins earlier that day.
