Cullowhee, N.C. -- The Western Carolina track and field team heads to Boone, N.C., this weekend for the App State Open. The final meet of April will serve as one more tune-up before the Catamounts head to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2024 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May.
The Purple and Gold will be represented by 10 student-athletes at the App State Open with nine competing in field events. Elias Barton will be the only Catamount to see action on the track as he is set to compete in the men's 200-meter dash on Saturday.
Action begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, though the Catamounts won't take the circle until later that afternoon in the men's javelin and the women's hammer throw. Saturday morning starts a bit earlier as the men's 10K takes off at 9:00 a.m. Riley Center, Landrey Pike, Hailee Jackson-Morgan, Merkenzee Wells, and Toria Roundtree will be the first Catamounts to see action that day in the men's shot put and the women's discus.
Athletes to Watch
Outside of the throws squads, Bella Hilleary and Sydney Gallant represent the Catamounts in the pole vault. The Purple and Gold duo is coming off a home showing where it took fifth and sixth place with 3.25-meter clears in the event at the Catamount Classic and look to improve upon their marks before the SoCon Championships.
Derica Currie is the only Catamount scheduled to compete in the jumps this weekend as she looks to surpass her previous long jump mark of 5.25m. She is currently the fourth-seeded athlete in the first flight.
