Cullowhee, N.C. – Tuesday's nonconference baseball game between Western Carolina and Presbyterian was halted by inclement weather and declared no contest after steady rain on a damp playing surface chased the teams from the field in the home half of the fourth inning at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled for a 5 p.m. start but was advanced to a Noon first pitch in anticipation of forecasted late afternoon and early evening rain and thunderstorms. However, morning rain prompted officials to tarp the field amidst showers just before the rescheduled start time. With the tarp pulled around 12:30 p.m., the first pitch was uncorked toward home plate just before 1 p.m.
Prior to the game being halted,
Trent Turner singled twice,
Mason Holton had homered to provide WCU's lone run, and pitchers
Kyle Riesselmann and
Griffin Guinther combined for six strikeouts – five by Riesselmann in the starting role – through the first four innings. Presbyterian held a 3-1 lead with the Catamounts at the plate when the umpires ended the affair.
Per NCAA rules, game statistics from Tuesday's contest will not count. The game will not be rescheduled.
WCU wraps up the conference season slate with a three-game road trip to Lexington, Va., to face the VMI Keydets (25-26, 6-12 SoCon) at Gray-Minor Stadium in a series that opens on Thursday (May 16) at 6 p.m. Each game is slated to be
